Question Have any of the Formula 1 / Race car enthusiasts built any Revell F1 cars?

Hey fellow modelers, have any of you built any of the Formula 1 kits made by Revell Germany? If so, did you experience any dislikes, gripes, or likes about the kits?

I just picked up one the these last night. The Jordan-Mugen Honda yellow car. Now, I usually don't gripe and complain about kits, but this one is really bad. I have found out that they're made by Protar-not very good to begin with. The moulding is bad, extremely bad. There aren't too many sink marks on this one , but several holes in areas where sink marks would usually be and many distorted pieces on the body. The decals are the only things that seem descent.

This is gonna be a real challenge to try and correct these flaws. Now I'm dreading this build. The Jordan car looks like such a cool subject to replicate and Tamiya doesn't make current versions except for the current Ferrari and McLaren kits.
Here's a pic of what the real car looks like.

I've heard all the horrible stories about Revell F1 cars. BUT, I had a chance to buy the F2000 at a reasonable price, so I bought it to see it for myself. I've seen the same poor molding quality as your Jordan kit, and tires are absolutely useless, just like I was told. If I didn't know how to fix the tire, I wouldn't have bought it, but thanks to Model Graphics article, those look fine now.

Perhaps, you might want to try the same.
I haven't completed the F2000, but it's still a workable kit.

I have built one (F310B) and wasn't impressed by that at all. Although I like that they are 1/24. Oh well.

As for the Jordan, I've heard horror stories (Mika?) about the yellow plastic melting under paint - something that supposedly no all kits have been affected by and in most cases curable by using primer. So be careful with that, it seems that they have cocked up the plastic formula or something.

Alex wishing you good luck and waiting for a building writeup (from both of you as I also have a 1/24 Marlboro decal set for the F1-2000)

True. I read it from an article in Scale Auto Modeller, I can't remember the issue, but I can post it here when I get home. Anyway, there is supposedly too much oil in the plastic, which causes some strange behaviour. Maybe there's more info on the net somewhere, have to look.

I have the Revell Mclaren on the workbench, must admit I was not impressed when I opened the box. The kit required a LOT of prep work to make it look decent, but hopefully a good paint job will solve all the other woes.
Tamiya only make the current Ferrari's, not the McLaren, they made a McLaren MP4/13 which I have, but we are now past the MP4/16 and they have yet to make anything further. The Revell McLaren kit is an MP4/12 kit, which I got because the scale, I am looking forward to building my Tamiya McLaren though.
Either way, I am sure you will make a great model out of that kit, just remember to be patient.

I don't have one but i saw a build up of the Ferrari F2000 in Scale Auto Modeler and it looked terrible. If i recall from memory the engine cover was made up of 2or3 parts with big gaps when it should be one piece.

They only good thing about them is that they are 1/24 and if you can get them looking good then they would be great for diorama's.

Thumbs down

I built a Revell Benetton B-192 and to be perfectly honest I wouldn't bother again it was total shite! It was that bad it went in the bin!!
Give me a Tamiya F-1 kit anyday, it's just a shame they don't make many current-ish cars!

Click on my homepage button and view the two I built, Ferrari F1-2000 and a Williams FW-13b.
Alas the Ferrari has now gone to a mate who offered me VERY good money for it (£125 to be precise!!!! offer like that I just couldn't say no!!)

Yes, the plastic is very soft. Almost vinyl-like, but instead of flexing a bit, it actually stretching! Terrible, terrible engineering of plastic on Protar's part. The plastic did melt/ deform with just light glue aplication of Tamiya's green cap extra thin cement. And this cement evaporates fast.

I haven't viewed Mr. Fukuda's link on the tires, but I'm sure it'll be helpful. Thanks for your responses felow modellers. This one's gonna give a real challenge.

The others are completely right, these kits suck. The wheels are too small, there are many molding mistakes, etc. Try to build it, but it will need a lotta work.

Our model shop in town here has plenty of them for sale and after looking at one i understand why they are cheap and dont sell.
The molding was shocking, flash everywhere. Most parts looked that bad, by the time some paint went on the detail would be gone.

I'd save your money and get a Tamiya one.
I'd be looking at taking it back to the shop for a refund.

I would not take one for free because I would never build it. The F2000 looks hideous the way the panels fit and the thickness of parts is out of scale, just to much work. I would not go near one.

That article wasn't done by the famous Trevor Pask was it? His models were something else and definitely in a category by them selves.
