Sard Supra Drifter

Hello all,
I am building a model in a another forum for a group build contest. The contest is theme based in that each group chooses their theme for the build. On my team our theme is to build a full drift race car. So i thought that I would share with all of you as well of what I am building for this contest.

My kit will be Tamiya’s Toyota SARD Supra GT.
This kit will serve as the foundation for me to build a drift spec racer.
Some modifications will include:
-Modified 2JZ-GTE engine from Tamiya’s Toyota Supra (street spec) kit
-Engine bay detail
-Slight body modifications
-Aftermarket wheels (though I have yet to decide on which)
-And other modifications that have yet to be determined

Hope you all enjoy....

When I build models my favorite part is the engine bay. With that being said I tend to spend a lot of my time and efforts in detailing the engine and the surrounding areas. As some of you may be aware, the SARD Supra is a curbside kit and as I had said before I will be building a modified 2JZ for my drifter. So the following is what I have done so far to get the engine bay ready.

The first thing I started with was fit the 2JZ into the SARD Supra. The 1:1 SARD Supra actually has a twin turbo inline four for the motor which the bottom of is depicted in the model. So modification was made to the chassis to accept the inline six of the 2JZ. I will have to scratch build some new motor mounts and steering components latter.

So with this kit being a curbside, I needed to cut the hood. After debating for a long time of where the cuts should be, I went ahead and made them.

With the hood cut out I wanted the engine bay to look more accurate, so I decided to cut the engine bay borders out of the street version. Once that was cut out I trimmed down the piece until it would fit properly.

Here is the engine bay mocked up with all the pieces as well as the hood from the street version. Some filler will be used to clean up the edges of the engine bay and make everything seem like one. I also mounted the front fenders.

And finally two questions that I have for you all.
One, I still am debating on what kind of rims to use, these are one that I have in mind. The other option is to order some aftermarket wheels, just need to figure out which ones. What do you think?
Secondly, I’m trying to think of what would be better for a wing. The wing that came with the SARD kit, or a GT wing?

Thanks for checking in and comments are always welcomed

Re: Sard Supra Drifter

that looks awesome man, im actually doing the same exact thing with my sard supra as we speak.... only thing that sucks is that i dont have (dont really want to cut apart a tamiya supra just for parts) spare tamiya supra to cut apart, so what im doing is scratch building the engine panels to my best ability, the hood was a paint in the ass to cut open, so damn thick.

and the hoods are a DIRECT replacements, its awesome

im also putting in a 2jz from the tamiya into this one, but mine will be a street version.

i am however using the sard engine as a basis for a scratch-built 2jz engine for my drag race supra.

im definatly going to keep an eye on this thread, great start so far man.

Nope, the teams are set now so unfortunately no new members can join.

Excellent work on the Supra by the way. I would never have thought to swap over the street Supra parts.

Re: Sard Supra Drifter

Hello all,
I thought that I would post pictures of the wings that I am debating over. The first two are with the SARD wing the other two are with a GT wing. I am kind of leaning more towards the SARD wing, though i might use a different GT if I go that route.

You can also see what my plans are for the hood as well!!!

Thanks,

Re: Sard Supra Drifter

the sard wing is nice, but not really drifter type... you need a different type of GT wing as this one makes the supra look wayyy to ricey

nice progress though, cant wait to see it done

Re: Sard Supra Drifter

I kinda like how it looks in your opening post...wingless. If your set on having a wing, maybe cut down the SARD one to a lower profile.

Re: Sard Supra Drifter

I would trade the mesh you have in the hood for some HO scale rail road chain link fence. It is actually made just like the mesh that you would use on a real car (expanded metal) and the holes are considerably smaller.

on the left top you see the HO scale "fence", top right is detail master photo etched mesh with it's octagonal holes, and in front you see the tamiya mesh.

Supras are just great. Endless ways to build them in both Model and prototype models. Keep up the good work.

Re: Sard Supra Drifter

Id say use the stock wing from the street kit. I think it flows with the huge fender flares better. You do sick work! The engine bay looks great!

Re: Sard Supra Drifter

Great idea with the hood and engine bay (parts) from the stock kit. Why not cut the front of the street car's chassis and replace the race car's chassis, and solve your problems fitting the I6? Looks great regardless. A well done race-to-street is always a treat!
