Talking Tutorial:Making Molds of Popular Aoshima Wheels!!

Ok you all this wil be my newest tutorial for 2008. Well I have made this wheel a lot as at that time I did not have a way to get more of this wheel, like now you can get this wheel at you LHS or HLJ well as for me I make my own and tires to.
Fitst things you need The Original wheel your going to work with, I picked

Like I said at the time the only way I could get more wheels like this was to buy more HKS silvias at $30 a pop I don't think so, so I came up with this way.
Things you will need List.
1. The wheel that you like (Must be a 3D type wheel)
2. RTV Silicone RTV Quick set kit, Rubber and Rubber to Rubber Mold Release.
3. Liquid Laytex Rubber
4. A buckit of Legos
5. X-Acto nife No.11 blade
6. Mixing cups, mixing sticks, tooth pics
7. A clean place to work.
8. Some type of Tubbing, Type > Alum. Styrene.
9. Liquid Casting Plastic caled a Resin casting kit.
10. Cutting shears
That's all Ican think of now:
Ok Take you OG wheel (That's Original wheel) and put the Liquid Laytex Rubber in the wheel and fill it up.

I'm using an old resin wheel an mold to prop up the wheel and show how I did what I did.
The red one is the OG wheel. once the wheel is full and dry, put some laytex under thewheel and place it on a flat spot and let dry. Ok now it's dry build your Lego box and mix up your RTV Silicone Rubber and pour it into the box. once that is dry pull up the first mold. It should look like this.

Ok now pull out the hard laytex rubber an put in your Alum. tubing to make the post. use a small drop of Laytex to hold it in place and let dry.

Ok now that's dry put on some more legos to make the 2nd part mold just be for you mix and pour use your Rubber to rubber Releasing agent. Just use a paint brush to put it on. All over the first mold and in side the wheel. This will keep your next pour from sticking to each othere. (Note This is for the first timers) Ok now that that is dry mix and pour on your next layer of RTV Silicone an let dry it should look like this.

Once that is dry pull out the tubbing and work,Wiggle, pull the two mold half's apart.

Ok now Part 2 of this thing.
now get you mixing cups and pour up to Equal parts of resin and clear harder:

ok pour the clear in to the gold resin and mix (It's have to mix and take pix at the same time). Once you fill the cup getting hot it's time to pour. (Note if your using a long time ste you will not need the thing I say) Oh ya get out that tooth pic so you can work out the bubbles.

I had to work fast I use Quick set Resin.
Ok now you have most of the bubbles out place the top on and let sit over night (for you long time caster) and for you all like me press and hold till the puddles that will form at top (Not you can see a lot of bubbles come out this way)

Now its dry and not hot to the touch. you can now start to cut of all that left over resin from the puddels. An work or wiggle the two parts apart.

Now trim the inside and out side of the wheel, and clean the wheels with Lacquer Thinner, let dry and paint them with primer if you need to(Note use primer if your goint to Chrome them).

Now what you all think of that.
Oh if any of you wan to sale any of your copys don't Copy Right Problems will come your way.
Oh and one mor thing to make a mole of the outer wheel you just nee to make a one sided moled. Remember to put some layetx under the wheel to keep them in place.

My fack wheel next to the real one.

If I have any miss spells sorry!

Re: Tutorial:Making Molds of Popular Aoshima Wheels!!

Hay thanks. I know my copys here have some bubbles in them when I take my time I cam make them come out a lot better. I just wanted to post this for a long time and now that I have told and shown some of my friends in a many E-Mails I thought I should share with you all to.
Oh an one more thing i wanted to tell you all the may be thinking of buying a Resin trans kit or wheels from any one. The reson that resin part's cost so much is it take's alot to make thim that's car body's ans some wheels. so keep that in mind. That's why I will show you all how or what go's in to making a mold. Some of you my know me from the Corvette Summer Sting ray build I have had a tuff time at it and I'm stuck now I need more Rubber to get going on my body. Just keep that in mind when you go to buy some thing made of resin. Oh and then there's "Profit" to.LOL

Do you cast tires the same way? How do you keep the silicone off of the parts you are casting? What do you use for the rubber? Does the resin painted up resemble rubber tires?

I have a few sets of rims/tires I'd like to cast, but I don't want to ruin the originals.

yes i didnt use any silicone baby powder on some circumstances and the tire isnt painted its dyed while mixing the resin. but the mold looks unstable because its missing locator pins so it could slide at any time.

im still trying to knock these out but not having much luck

Does making the mold ruin the tires in anyway?

Not at all unless the original tires are made of silicon. Silicon only adheres to silicon and there should be no reaction with the rubber used in the kit tires.

Re: Tutorial:Making Molds of Popular Aoshima Wheels!!

sorry I didn't get back to you all sooner.
Yes I cast my tires the same way I do my wheels. I smash the tow half together and most or the bubbles come out the sides.

I use Micro-Mart's TCR-40 RTV Urethane Rubber. It's not all that bad and not all that good.LOL
