W.I.P Tamiya Mitsubishi Lancer VI WRC

I started to build this kit about 2 years ago but made a real mess of the bodyshell painting so it has been tucked away in the attic ever since.

Anyway after messing up my McLaren Mp4/5B body and having to strip off the paint I also stripped the body on the Mitsubishi in order to have another go at it.The McLaren is still underway I haven't forgotten about it.I'm waiting for some new decals to arrive so I can re-paint and finish it properly.
The decals on the Mitsubishi were ruined during the stripping so I obtained an excellent sheet from Studio 27 (Rally Australia 2000) I also had some decals left over from an old Focus build giving me the option to do the Rally Australia 1999 or the Rally Great Britain 1999.I'm not going to do the Rally Australia 2000 because the car ran with a different front bumper so I would need to modify it which I don't want to do.

Here's a few progress pictures so far.The underside is very colourful.I've also been trying out the Tamiya enamels which brush and spray very well indeed. The front intercooler needs the blue painting on the hoses.

I will post some more update pictures when I progress further.

Re: W.I.P Tamiya Mitsubishi Lancer VI WRC

I finished the intercooler. It was painted Tamiya X-11 (outside) and XF-16 (centre) The pipes were masked and sprayed X4 Blue and X7 Red.I used Gunze Mr Mark Softer on the Mitsubishi logo and it conformed perfectly,it looked almost painted on.I was very pleased with the result. The hose clamps were covered with thin strips of self adhesive aluminium foil.

The dashboard was painted with Zero jet black. The inserts were painted with a thin wash of Tamiya Flat black (enamel) Details were picked out with Tamiya enamels. The decals were placed and a drop of Johnson's Klear was added to the dial to simulate the glass.

The seats are straight from the box painted with Vallejo Air black and Tamiya Gunmetal (backs) I used the decal's for the straps.I know some people frown upon decal straps but this is only a quick build and I wanted to keep it OOB.Vallejo Air matt varnish restored the flat finish to the seats after I had gloss coated them for the decals.

More updates tomorrow.

Happy New Year to all !! See you in 2007 !!

I never masked the dash out really. After painting the base colour the details were hand painted with Tamiya enamels both by brush and with a wooden cocktail stick for the buttons. The recesses were painted with very thin Tamiya flat black enamel which I flowed into the different sections with no masking required.

Re: W.I.P Tamiya Mitsubishi Lancer VI WRC

Time for another quick update.I've been continuing work on the chassis today and assembling the suspension parts etc.

The front suspension. The top two bits I've circled took about 20 mins each side to mask up due to the shape.I used very fine strips of Tamiya tape and needle point tweezers to do the job.The bottom circles I used Black/Carbon decal for a cleaner finish. It was better than trying to mask them out and spray paint them.

The back suspension was equally as complex masking all the seperate colours and letting them dry before spraying the next.I used black/carbon decal again on the circled parts for a cleaner finish and because I found them impossible to mask out properly.

Here's a couple of overall chassis views so far.I employed the Tamiya weathering set again on the exhaust.Got a bit carried away with it too,but it's so addictive once you start you can't stop!!!!

I'll have more tommorrow.Hoping to get it on it's wheels and make a start assembling the interior parts and roll cage.

Re: W.I.P Tamiya Mitsubishi Lancer VI WRC

Another update.Got the car on it's wheels today and continued with the cockpit.First a couple of general views.

Next close ups of the radiator and intercooler at the front.

I also sprayed the roll cage in gloss white, which is now drying. It should be ready to mask up for the grey padded areas in a few days.I can then fit the dashboard and other associated bits before moving onto the bodyshell and rear wing etc.Any comments, questions welcome as always.See you on the next update.

Man what a colourful underside. Looks too beautiful not to show off once you've finished. I like the way the exhaust heat staining came out. I must try my hand at one of those Tamiya weathering kits. I can't wait to see your next update.

Re: W.I.P Tamiya Mitsubishi Lancer VI WRC

Made some more progress,so another small update.I painted the body parts and the bodyshell etc.Instead of using the Tamiya TS-49 Bright Red as indicated I used Zero Pure Brilliant Red and Zero Pure White paints, both supplied by Steve at Hiroboy Models. They sprayed really well and dried very fast which meant I could get the body done very quickly, not having to wait long before masking it out, which was a bonus.

Bodywork painted (yet to be clearcoated)

Front and rear bumpers.(clearcoated)

I used Tamiya tape cut into thin strips to mask the rear bumper and the bonnet. It worked very well in all,I was pleased with the result.

Also finished the roll cage painting and installation.I added some mesh at the back to represent the cargo netting on the real car.

The dashboard fitted in place.

These are the two paints i used on the body.

I'm going to clearcoat the body tomorrow, allow some drying time and then polish all the body parts together.See you on the next update.Any comments or questions welcome.
