Airbag light - what steps do I take?
My son drives a pristine 2004 Camry XLE. The airbag light came on recently. I've searched the forum, and can't find a description of what I should do.
I have a basic scanner, and I just scanned it. There were no DTCs, and I could not reset the light. I checked to see if there happened to be something unplugged under the passenger seat, but couldn't find anything. What should I be looking for? I've read on other threads that the dealership has recommended replacing the passenger seat for $1200. OUCH! I've got two kids in college! Anyway, I'd appreciate some idea of the things that I should check before I get professional help. Also, will the light go out on its own once I discover and fix any obvious problem, like something unplugged? Thanks for your help! |

Your basic scanner will not read SIR (air bag) codes. They will need to be scanned by someone with a capable scan tool. Only thing you can really do is inspect for blown fuses and make sure all the connections are good. But first, you should have the codes scanned.

Thanks. I'll definitely check the fuses and wiring first, then find an independent mechanic with the advanced scanner, if I can't find a problem. |

Autozone will scan most OBD2 codes for free. I would call them, assuming there is one in your area, and ask them if the airbag code is something they can scan. Definitely worth 1 phone call.

I believe you will have to go to a Toyota dealer for this analysis.

Does anyone know what fuse to check? None of the fuses are labeled SRS or Airbag!

Download this file, unzip, and see the section on SRS:
