Camry oil change
I have a 93 Camry 4cyl (150k miles). I want to be able to change the engine oil/filter myself instead of going to the lube shops where they put in low quality oil and filter and want to charge a lot of good quality ones. I havent changed the oil myself on this car. where is the oil drain located and how to remove and install oil filter. any precautions when doing that.? I plan to use non synthetic oil (Castrol high mileage or Quaker state oil). Which oil filter should I use? Also how difficult it is to change the transmission oil. would appreciate any suggestions and precautions.
thanks. Last edited by t4ia; 03-14-2005 at 12:47 AM. |

Re: Camry oil change
If you've never changed fluids you might need to buy a couple things.
I use plastic Rhino Ramps from Wal Mart to elevate the car. You need a 10 mm allen to remove the trans fluid drain plug. At the auto parts store look under brake tools for that piece. GM uses a 10 mm allen on the brakes that will fit your transmission drain plug. Oil drain is 13 mm (I think) socket. Buy a small set of metric sockets (not expensive). Oil drain is on the left side; trans fluid drain is on the right side of engine. Read owners manual for checking fluid levels. I would use Castrol over Quaker State oil. Wix, Purlator, AC Delco, Fram Tough Guard all good filters. Toyota filters are my choice. The oil filter is a breeze to remove on Camry 4 cyl. You might need an oil filter wrench if filter is too tight from previous oil change. Hand tighten the new filter after putting clean oil on the gasket. |

Thanks.. I will change the engine oil. how much oil do you put on top of the new filter gasket. should I drip some oil on it or just lubricate it a little bit. How is the transmission oil added. Can it be poured in like we do engine oil or does it need special tools.

Re: Camry oil change
Put a little clean oil on your finger and smear it on the new oil filter gasket.
Add transmission fluid in the dip stick tub of the transmission. Auto Zone or Wal Mart sells slinder orange funnels (99 cents) that will work. Draining the transmission fluid thru the drain plug releases a little over two quarts of AT fluid. (with car on ramp). I drain the fluid about every 300-400 miles, about four times until the fluid begins to turn a reddish tint. You could pay $79.00 to get a 12 qt. flush if you wanted at a Jiffy Lube. |

Re: Camry oil change
The oil drain plug on this car should be 14MM.
As far as the transmission fluid change interval, I like 2 years or 30,000 miles, whichever occurs first. Mike |

Re: Camry oil change
Yes, as he said, he does it four times at that interval instead of paying $79 at Jiffy Lube for a flush. It is not as efficient, but much cheaper.
Yes, oil pan drain bolt is 14 mm.

How much oil does the 99 V6 engine take. I put in 5quarts. Is it enough. I cant seem to get a correct measure from the dip stick. It seems it is going above the top hole on the dip stick, and I know for sure that it should be below that hole. thanks, Ashutosh |

Re: Camry oil change
Check your owner's manual or call a Toyota dealer and ask.

just don't use a fram filter they are horrible, they use cardboard end caps, so they can leak dirty oil back into the system, which increases engine wear, pennzoil filters are the same thing as a fram extra guard so don't use those either, purolator wix acdelco k&n bosch premium filters are all good ones, i would use the max life filter since it is the same as the purolator at a lower price
