3.8 Throttle Body Swap on 1.9?

I have heard of a few people swaping the stock 1.9 throttle body to a 3.8 throttle body. How much work is involved in doing this? What will this do to the engine performance wise? Will it run too rich?

Scott.

yes you can do it, but you will have to grind out a little at the intake manifold to make it bigger so it lines up right

Scott, we will do it, but not right now. I don't have the $$$. Maybe towards the end of May.

I hope I can feel a difference in performance.

I tried it back when I still had a 1.9, I uesd a 50mm 1st gen GT TB.
Both the GT and 3.8 TB you will need to not only port out the first few inch of the mani but also move the throttle cable to the other side and and rewire the TPS to use the 3.5/GT sensor, (cant reuse old one because the senors are on opisite sides, they spin in differnt directions).
I probobly gained about 2 hp in the high R's but lost it on the low. Its not really worth the effort, there are better mod's to spend your time on.
But you can give it a try your self, maybe you can convince your self other wise.

I found ,the only way to make a throttle body biger than 48mm fit ,was to cut off the upper plenum of the intake, leaving exactly 7" of runner(I cut off about 3" of runner) ,I welded a piece of allunimum driveshaft tube(about 3 1/2" diam.) to the runners, the intake resembles a 9 laying on its back . I made a plate to mount a 65mm TB from a 3.0L "99" ranger, I belive, I am also using the throttle cable from the same .
I had to fabricate a bracket from the two usable parts of the bracketts that came with both engines respectivly, for that cable to work.,and bought the TPS sensor harness repair kit from ford to patch the "99" sensor in to the "95" connector power gains are only realy noticable when I hit the nitrous VS/. with the big TB and shortened intake, it was 1.63 seconds faster in the 1/4:smoker:

with no nitrous and with stock slightly smoothed and ported throttle body I ran 15.95 @79

I changed the TB /intake and ran ,no NOS 15.24@80

with a single nozzle wet (.030 nos - .032 fuel) jett makes about a 50 shot

several runs where made to figure out the traction issues ,times ranged from high 14s to high 13's in the 90's

and today I changed jetts to (.40 nos - .044 fuel) about a 60 HP shot, WOW,holly S
bite me.... mustangs
13.45 @94 not a whole lot of top speed but damn thats quick for a scort
I need to change my "fouth gear" ratio for better top speed

all runs where made at sealevel with stock 14" 195 65 BF TA rubber
on 92 octane pumpgas one and can of super 104 octane boost
(actualy the non nitrous runs where made on strait 92 ,no 104 booster.

Are you still running the stock C/R?
Did you know that the Pacesetters Header is made in the wrong firing order?

Did you redo the floor boards? How did you remove that much weight? I'm not saying you didn't, I just want to know.

What did you do about your PS rack? Did you swap to a pony system or just remove the ps pump and plug off the lines?
