Life imitates art - Jurassic Park becomes REAL.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/...tml?cmp=EM8705

well,it's not dinosaurs just yet,but it's happened.

Is the resurection of extinct species neccesary, desirable, morally justifiable? What are your thoughts on the deal?

Well when you think about it
they are binging back extinct species,we most likely caused them to go extinct by either, bringing in new species, hunting them off, deforestation, urbanization of rural area's,
So in a way i kinda think its a good thing to a certain extent
also who else thinks it would be bitchin' if they cloned dinosaurs?

This really depends on far they take it. I don't know. I always believed once it's gone, let it be. Jurassic Park would be the coolest thing, but let's keep it like they did in the 1st movie, on an island. Perhaps they should do that with all cloned species, keep them in special places. I mean, who hasn't seen Encino Man? bringing back something from the past into the...present, but future for it. it'll have to adapt to a lot and depending on what they bring back. Of coutrse, this also leads to cloning dead relatives and that would be wron. not to mention the scariest thing possible. Your grandma dies, you see her buried, then she shows up at your door the next day. Yeah, I'm gettin' ahead of everything but still.

The dinosaur thing, awesome!!! Just keep them isolated.

Other then the fact many animals became extinct long before man arrived - how many of those species would not be able to live in the world today? Face it, lots of animals that died off nobody misses. The dodos gone? Big deal. No mammoths? So? What are we going to do, put them with the moose to compete for the same food? Which leads to how many current species would be sentenced to extinction because these animals showed up again.

So its certainly not neccesary. I dont know why it would be desirable. I don't see any moral implications. Justifiable - I guess if only to say someone can do it.

IT'S POSSIBLE.....BUT HERE'S MY QUESTION....IF WE FORCED THESE CREATURES INTO EXTENSION LIKE Amish_kid SAID....WHAT'S THE USE OF BRING THEM BACK SINCE WE'VE ALREADY SLASHED AND BURNED THEIR HABITAT AND WHERE ARE WE GONNA PUT THEM?? IN ANOTHER CREATURES HABITAT TO CAUSE MASS CONFUSION AND A POTENTIALLY DEADLY SITUATION?? I SAY LEAVE THEM EXTINCT B/C NATURE HAS ALREADY ADJUSTED TO THEIR ABSENCE

Please don't post in caps.Yes,I'VE READ YOU SIG,and this post would appear to prove that you can use lower case if it suits you.
Several people have complained on the boards about your ignorant use of caps,it's time that you came to terms with the idea that it is not considered polite to post in all capital format.Nobody else does it,and if you persist, corrective action will be taken.

The reprecussions of this could be disasterous, as people have already mentioned. There is no possible way to predict what impact an animal will have if released into an ecosystem which no longer has a niche for it. There are a few species which have gone extinct or are near extinction due to human neglegence, and our depleting of thier poulation could have negative impacts on the ecosystem, so by bringing these populations up to a self sustainable level may be in our best interest, but it is not in our best interest to just bring back long extinct species. Like I said though, there is such a huge web of interactions between species in any given environment, so it would be impossible to predict the outcome of introduction.

BUT cloning for use of release into the wild, and cloning for laboratory use are two different things. BY FAR most of our therapeutic drugs are derived from natural resources. If we can bring back uncountable numbers of venemous animals or plants, we may be able to find therapuetic uses for them, and cultivate the beneficial compound they naturally produce.
For example, there is a species of HIGHLY venemous snake which is very close to extinction, and only found on a small island just off of brazil. The venom of these snakes is being investigated and may have great therapeutic potential. Mass cloning of these snakes, or inserting thier genes which code for the venemous compound into another snake which is easier to breed in captivity could yeild lots of cultivation of the beneficial compound..... But cloning the snakes for release into the wild would be retarded, as thier ONLY natural habitat is the small island which they evolved on, and release onto mainland Brazil (where they have never been as a species) may have disasterous reprecussions on that environment.

That is always a concern. A classic example is africanized honey bees (killer bees) escaping from a lab in South America.

Just wondering, where would you copy/paste your own opinion from?It is widely accepted that posting in all caps on the net is the written form of shouting, and is rude.Dont do it please. You have demonstrated that you can abide by the normal standards of this board, and there's no reason why you shouldn't.

Back to the topic at hand: I honestly dont care. Unless a dinosaur or something starts terrorizing the nation, I could really give a shit.
