Skip Shift
Will someone please explain what skip shift (CAGS) does? My friend has a 93 Camaro (skip shift wasn't put in Camaros until 1994) that is grinding into third. He seems to think that this is skip shift at work. I'm gonna go ahead and say it could be a syncro or something. Thanks for your help in settling this dispute. By the way, the car never skips second and goes into it every time. No light on the dash either.

That's not what his is doing. The skip shift mechanism is for the M6 cars to meet EPA standards. Under slow acceleration, the car will force you to shift to fourth from first (it locks out the gates for two and three). All that you have to do is accelerate faster than the computer wants to shift you at, and it lets you go to second. The skip-shift eliminator tells the computer to forget that, and you don't have to worry about that any longer. I would say your diagnosis is closer to what is going on with the car...
