1974 Ghia Transmission

I have a 74 Ghia that I want to put an 5speed overdrive transmission into. What would be a good substitute?
The car is all original right now, down to the 13 inch wheels.
It has been garaged for the last 20 years.
I am thinking of getting it out for a daily driver and want to increase its fuel economy.

Thanks

Re: 1974 Ghia Transmission

Clark,

Sorry for the delay...

I'm thinking the 5-speed from an early '90s Ranger would "bolt up". The 2.3 block is still pretty much the same. Some checking of the clutch splines, overall length and shifter location would be in order. Perhaps there's a local wrecking yard with such a pickup there. I'm sure they would allow you to take measurements, especially if you intended to buy the trans IF it "fits".

You may need the bellhousing, flywheel, etc. The same wrecking yard should have an "interchange" manual, that should have that info.

You could also contact Kiesler (trans people).
