Problem with Security lamp
Hi,
I have my PA now for good 4 weeks, and drove since 800 km. Today was raining all the day, and tonight I drove to Burger King and in drive in i made the engine off, after the order was complete I want start my car, but the security light comes on and of course the car didnt start. I roll forward that other cars can pass the drive in. I cleant the car, I had 8 try to start engine, and then I called my girl friend to pick me up. I give it up, but after 10 minutes of waiting I give the car one more chance and thy start. At home I was parking and shut the engine off, and give another try and work perfectly. But I wont that this happened anymore, so which parts I can check for this problem? Was it cos it rain? Is the key soon to die? |

you may have put the key back in and the contacts in the lock cylinder didn't rub the key right or there was dirt on the resistor contacts or you just found a glitch or the wires in the tilt wheel are beginning to break one thread at a time from all the bending and the resistance is changing slight so that when you turn the key the theft deterrent module (or the PCM if it's an earlier model) didn't read the right resistance. There is a tolerance of about 10% in the reading from what it was when the car was new. or your key chip is dirty. You can clean with alcohol and rub with a pencil eraser on both sides of the chip. You can dip key chip into rubbing alcohol (or vodka if it pleases) and insert quickly into the lock cylinder hoping to clean the contacts inside the lock that make electrical contact. But those wear with all the millions of times keys are inserted and removed. Watch the security light on the dash. Insert the key and turn to ON. The Security light should come on for about 5 seconds and go off with a successful read of the chip resistance. If the resistance is wrong the light flashes for three minutes before it is ready for another attempt to read the key chip. It doesn't engage the relay to the starter and doesn't turn on the fuel injectors during that three minutes. Think back to the drive through and see if you were trying to restart before the flashing security light went off. If the security light comes on while driving and goes off, the unit may be getting failing readings on the resistance. It won't shut down after it has allowed starting, but it's an indication you may have a problem. Solution: bypass VATS. Find an alarm company and have them install just the little resistor into the wiring so the computer reads that resistance instead of the key resistance. or http://vats.likeabigdog.com/ and bypass it yourself putting a resistor into the series with the wires going TOWARD the computer--not toward the lock cylinder in the steering wheel. |

Re: Problem with Security lamp
Thx for the long Answer.
The Security Light stays on if I put my key in. So I didnt wait 3 Minutes I try it in 10 sec. distance. Can I clean the key hole with alcohol and a cotton bud? |

Re: Problem with Security lamp
try changing to a newer spare key or cleaning the key with alcohal there is a by pass that you can do if the prouble continues its about $500 to fix but less than $20 to bypass

Re: Problem with Security lamp
If getting a new key, make sure you get the right key with the right code or it will not work.I have heard of 27 differant codes for these keys.I know someone that was told this by the dealer, lost a key with this system in a 1989 Corvette.Kent Moore does make a checker to see what the code is for the key,for the Vats system.

Re: Problem with Security lamp
There are 15 different resistors, see this thread: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=967450
Just use a multimeter. This is the site that explains the bypass: http://vats.likeabigdog.com/ |
