Vatts by-pass

I was wondering if anyone knew what general range the resistor in the ignition key is supposed to read. It's been a while since I've used my multimeter to actually measure resistance and the readings I'm getting are confusing.

Re: Vatts by-pass

There are 15 different resistances used in the keys... so each car is a bit different..

Re: Vatts by-pass

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for. I'm reading .33 at the 20k setting with my meter. When I connect the 2 leads it has a reading of .20 with a new battery installed. I'm thinking I might have to take the key to work and use one of the meters there to see if I get something closer to one of the values you've listed here. So if it turns out I've got the .523 I'll need a 523 ohm resister or am I moving the decimal too much?

Re: Vatts by-pass

You may have a .402 resistor, you need to verify. Usually, a resistor with + or - 10% of the reading will work fine. So .400 should work; (if your meter is correct.)

Kent Moore does make the tool to see what the code for the key is and much easier this way.It is not cheap and you can find it on Ebay.

Re: Vatts by-pass

I used a meter at work and came up with .521 on the key. One of the avionics techs dabbles with Ham radios and built up a gang of resistors that measured .522 so that should get me close enough. This forum is a great resource for all us guys who either don't trust or can't afford others working on our vehicles. Thanks again, I'm sure I'll be back.
