Side Moldings

Hey guys

I have a 96lx

I've seen a lot of pictures without the side moldings on the sides of the escort and it really looks nice.

How would i get the moldings off?

HI Guys


If anyone’s interested. They are stuck on with adhesive and currently set on holes in the door. So if you want them off you have to fill in those holes and paint the side over. Honestly I thought it was only stuck on with adhesive, I don’t feel like painting over my car so, I’ll leave it lol

You go to a junkyard and rip one off to find out ?

I have a '94 LX and wasn't sure what you were referring to. There's no reason you'd ever want them off... that would be pretty ugly hehe. (the silver color clashes with any color but black, gold, silverish-grey) Black rubber moldings on them are attached by adhesive, but the ends are also pinned or attached from the inside of the door. Have to rip/cut'em off. It's common to see cars with them missing, but it's because the rubber dry-rots and the adhesive gets baked away under the sun.

My passenger side front molding got hit by some chemical at Mike's Car Wash that shriveled it up like fried bacon. (probably a jet that was supposed to be aimed at the wheel caps)

To keep them and the rubber door+trunk seals, rubber seals surrounding the windows (including windshield, back) healthy, I hit them with silicon lubricant from time to time. Rub it in with a paper towel or cloth. This is particularly good to do on a hot day when sitting under the sun anyway.

I tried to paint the part of the molding that was missing black. However and to my surprise, there is actually a clear coat layer over that silver colored molding. So the paint doesn't apply itself uniformly and spots-up very badly.

Are you talking about the weather strips? I ment the side moldings in the middle of the doors that prevent door jamming anther vehicle.

I also suspect that the OP might be referring to the roof rails, not the actual side mouldings.

Ah, that's what you're talking about. I've never seen those off on the '94s. Wouldn't have any clue about a '96. But nah, not talking about the door or window seals. On the '95 and below, there is a black, decorative rubber strip directly beneath all of the windows.
