Finally fixed my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO MORE SMOKE! So last week i got SICK of sitting in traffic (an unusual amount of traffic i might add) with my exhaust billowing smoke and people pointing at me lol. So i decided no matter what that id take apart my engine and get down to it this weekend. So i spent $35 on valve stem seals and valve cover gaskets and went to it. I had my dad helping me so he was working on the right side of the engine tediously un-doing the rockers and all that when i decided i'd start taking off the other valve cover gasket (which is the one covered with hoses and crap so thats why this side has never been taken apart.) After FINALLY getting that thing off, i inspected the head and noticed something. The rear oil drainage port was totally clogged. I un-clogged it and i KNEW that this was the problem so i didnt bother going any further replacing valve stem seals, which were in good condition anyway. The valve cover would fill with oil and basically force the engine to eat oil. I never would have thought it could be clogged like it was. And upon testing this indeed was the problem this whole time, after all the different things i thought it was.

At one point i thought it was piston rings or something serious like that, but after looking into the piston with a scope that i have, you can STILL see the factory cross-hatching on the piston walls! Can ya believe that!! I really did want a 350 swap though, but with money these days i think my 305 will be just fine. So it looks like my 305 will live to die another day!..actually no, not die but you know what i mean lol.

Re: Finally fixed my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like a Pennzoil engine (or Quaker State - same thing). Sludge in a 1 quart bottle. It may also be gasket fragments from some previous work. You mentioned before that you found pieces on the other head that looked like chunks of stem seals.

I think those chunks i mentioned before were actually from the old valve cover gasket that i replaced. I forgot to mention what the hole was clogged with. It still baffles me at what clogged it but it almost resembles fiber glass, kind of like the black hairy insulation crap that lines the hood. Don't ask me how it got in there. I'm guessing there was a little bit of sludge in the drain port, and then maybe debris (from the air filter) went through the engine and stuck in there? I have no clue really since this is on the side that DOESNT have the oil fill, so the only way anything could get in there is through the oil, or through the valve cover breather.

the breather must have a fine screen to prevent the filter material from being injested...that is a good possibility..
