I need help!

I am trying to figure out what you call a part under my car its between the oil pan and transmission pan it has a wire connector leading to it and when you unplug it the car shuts off it is making a rattling noise that makes the car sound like a diesel is it the flywheel?

I have a couple of suggestions. First, take a photo of it and link to the photo here (can use a free photo sharing service such as Photobucket, etc.). Second, use punctuation in your posts like you agreed to do per the forum guidelines.

The flywheel will not have an electrical connection to it, it is purely mechanical. The starter motor connects to the flywheel teeth during a start event, but I don't think you'd be able to unplug any of the connections to it when the car is running that would cause the engine to stall.

Unfortunately I took a look at the photo and I don't recognize it. It appears to be a hall effect sensor on the flywheel, but I'm not sure why it would be there. I don't see a similar sensor on my wife's car. Is your LS a manual transmission?

That's prolly the crank position sensor! Check Rock auto for a picture to see if it matches!....302NOVA

That would help explain why the car would stall when it's disconnected, but I don't know why they would mount it on the flywheel rather than the crankshaft since the same engine is used with the Automatic transmission and in that case they mount it on the crankshaft. Plus, they'd need to index the flywheel then so the sensor would know where TDC on cylinder #1 is. That's extra effort when a mount and tone ring is already engineered at the other end of the crankshaft.

Since unplugging the sensor caused the engine to stall, there is probably a diagnostic code that's been set. You could have the PCM scanned for stored codes to see what it indicates. If it says there's an issue with the CKP signal or similar, then 302Nova is likely right. The factory service manual shows the CKP connector on the front of the engine and doesn't distinguish between Automatic or Manual transmissions. Unfortunately, without know what that part is, it's difficult to find in the service manual.

I was actually thinking of an engine running or crank pos sensor to the PCU.
Working with both electrical & pictorial schematics on old school TV's canbe a pain!

Changing the Package and pos of a sensor on a new cars is
like having to buy a new tool to remove a bolt.

It is a V8 automatic.Do you know why the flywheel would be making a noise,that makes the car sound like a diesel? Should i replace it now instead of waiting til the car breaks all the way?

Whats the year + mileage on this car?
Is it more like a Dodge Ram with a noisy rattle?
Shut engine down ASAP, befor you need a new motor.

It's a 2000 model with 135,000 miles and the only thing i have changed is the battery and alternator.I've had the car about 3 years now it's been fine except for the missfire thing that seems to be a common thing on these cars.I would say the noise is like a volvo! but it sometimes is quiet and at times sounds like i'm driving a truck (while idiling)not when driving.I have learned so much from this forum and appreciate the feedback.

Jeep uses flywheel to get timing from CPS so I also think that is CPS. The thing I see in pix is that open area.Usually that is a inspection area and would be covered by inspection plate,that seems to be missing. If any foreign object got into flywheel area (like small stone) could cause noise and problems.I would also check the torque converter bolts to flywheel since inspection plate is off.Also check to see if starter is loose,since your real question is what to do about noise correct?

Jag S Type has the same issues as Lincoln LS, and they both canbe fixed.
If your car is misfiring, a damaged Catalytic converter will amplify noise.

Because of Age + mileage, I would put my money on BAD secondary cam tensioners.
The 1st type of tensioner would wear out, and derail the cam chain.

Caution - This is Interfearence type engine, the valves will bend.

Can you can isolate the noise on the R or L side of engine?
How many miles did the car have on it, when you bought 3 years ago?
Is there any old service records given to you?
