Benifits of oil filter relocation?

I understand that oil filter relocation would be good for ease of access, but are there any other benefits performance oriented????

Often, the stock oil filter location is at one of the hottest parts of an engine compartment, wedged beside the block and often, near an exhaust manifold.

A remote location gives you the opportunity to mount the filter in a cooler location, which can help lower the oil temperature a bit.

Also, the remote lines allow for the easy installation of a proper oil cooler.

Re: Benifits of oil filter relocation?

Really convinience is the only benefit. Any time you add a remote oil filter, you run the risk of reducing oil flow and pressure to the engine. The path of oil goes from the pan, the pump, the filter, then the engine. Anything you add in the way will potentially reduce how much oil and how much pressure you can get to the engine.

Done properly, its not a big issue. Done improperly it ranges from simply reducing engine life to catastrophic failure in a short amount of time.

The only time I have ever used a remote filter was when there was no other choice because of some chassis or frame fitment issue when swapping engines.

Made for convenience but also allow for better oil cooling via location as well as capacity. Most kits allow you to run an extra litre of oil, this allows your oil to have more time to cool as it flows through your system.

.
That is exactly what the machine shop operator advised me when I was building my first engine back in the mid 1980's. I was interested in putting one of these kits in and he strongly advised me against doing so, mostly for the reasons curtis stated. He also mentioned about the short amount of time from when you start your engine and the oil lines get pressurized that some components of the engine could starve for oil, which is not good , especially on a newly rebuilt engine. From that point on i haven't installed an oil filter relocation kit in any of my vehicles and have fared all right.
