Found grease, CV boot

Hi,

I have a 1998 Grand Prix GT. There is approximately 230,000 miles on it. While looking into another problem, I found grease (not black in color; a slight olive color) on the back firewall, a beam (just below the boot), oil filter, and ¾ circumference largest portion of the boot. Was unable to locate the opening on the boot after cleaning it. But I do believe it probably the boot (no grease several days ago).

Never had a problem (i.e. no noise) with the joints and/or drive shaft on that side.

Is there a procedure to replacing the boot (adjacent to the motor; passenger side)? How long does it take to replace? Are special tools required? Also, any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Wide Track

Re: Found grease, CV boot

Hi,

Started working on removing the cv axle today. When I removed the axle about 4-5 cups of transaxle fluid came out. Is this normal?

Note: I do not believe this is a problem, but I had the car in neutral while removing the axle (allow me to find a good position to remove it).

Thanks in advance,

Wide Track

Re: Found grease, CV boot

Having it in neutral is no problem as is loosing a little ATF.

x2, normal. Just top off the fluid when you are done.

Thanks troy1 and tblake,

Completed. Was a little concern, anticipated less fluid.

Again thanks,

Re: Found grease, CV boot

Nice work. Depending on the angle your car is sitting at and if you jack up just one side or both will determine how much (if any) fluid comes out.
