Williams FW-07 – Recovery and rebuild (* Progress Pics *)

Well, this is a project I never thought making.
I have this Williams FW-07 in my collection for many years. In fact this is my second our third ever car model.

This car have every mistake a modeller can do, no primer, no paint (there were no Pure White in the stores for quite some time so I decided not to paint it). The decals are terribly placed since I was years to know that such thing as Micro Set existed and the largest decal I applied until then was just small insignias in planes, tanks and helicopters. For several times I thought of simply send this model to the trash, but since it was a rare and out of production model I decided to keep it.
Just for the record, do you know who was one of the 1979 Williams sponsor?

Engine is quite well build so there’s nothing much to point here.

Today I was visiting my normal model store when I found this decals

so I decided to give a new life to this old model.
I already started the first phase of the process, removing the clear coats and decals. Good thing there were no paint applied, just 2 coats of X-22, so thing will be much easier for me.
I removed all the X-22 using alcohol. It took me about 3 hors to do it.

Decals were easily removed using normal tape.

Next step will be sanding and priming the body.
New progress pictures to come.

Good plan!

Those new decals look very interesting, should make a striking model.

Nuno,

Any pics of the real car in the livery you'll be building yours in?

Good luck with the restoration Nuno! Looks like a very colourful livery.

RAM racing ran a pair of Williams FW07Bs at the Canadian and US GPs in 1980. Car 51 carried the Rainbow Jeans sponsorship. At Montreal Kevin Kogan failed to qualify in number 51 and at Watkins Glen Geoff Lees took over and also failed to qualify. However, the team's second car qualified 15th in the US GP and went on to finish 9th, one lap down on the winner and 1980 world champion Alan Jones also in a Williams.

That is what the 1980 Autocourse has to say on the matter. They didn't do chassis number logs back then so I don't know if these cars were previous race winners with the works team or anything interesting like that.

Notice the decal sheet is labled Theodore Racing, however Autocourse lists the entrant as RAM racing

The Bin Laden sponsorship was bought to Alan Jones' attention during one if the GPs he as commentating on in late 2001. Jones' response was along the lines of "If I'd known who he was back then I'd have run over the bastard!"

Nice one Nuno. I've looked in my documentations, but was unable to find a pic of that car. I think it was run by Theodore Racing or something early '80s. But I'm not sure 100%. Keep us informed man and good luck.

This project you've taken. How do you remove the parts that have been already glued together... or can you ?

Thanks and good luck

One way to do it is to freeze the model, while it's cold seperate the parts, the glue will often break or release before the plastic. Then sand the remaining glue form the part.
