Re: 2002 grand prix 3.1 sluggish during accelaration

Merge the two threads possibly? As I think both issues are related if not one in the same.

When was the last full tune up done on your car?

I know 2002 GP's have known issues with cat converters clogging up, GM is aware of the issue and extended the warrenty to 120,000 miles. However I think that the extended warrenty only applies to the 3800 2001 and 2002 GP's.

You could to a vacuum test on your motor to confirm/rule out the cat converter as your issue.

Re: 2002 grand prix 3.1 sluggish during accelaration

Yeah, I'd check vacuum as the first step to verify the converter isnt plugged.

you can rent a vacuum guage from advance or oreilley's.

Hook it to an unported vacuum line. I know the late 3100's if they dont have an air pump, have a vacuum cap on the drives side towards the radiator of the intake plenum. You can hook in there.

your car should show about 16 inches of vacuum at idle, then increase the rpms to 2000. As you increase, the vacuum will drop, and then jump back up and should remain steady as you hold it at 2000. If vacuum dropps, chances are the cat converter is plugged.
