Hard to Start, 1st 2nd or 3rd try

735il runs well, idle is just a little rough sometimes. New plugs, compression is OK, etc... however it sometimes starts on the 1st try, seldom the second crank, and always the third. Never need a four try. Anybody have a clue as to why it does not start first try?

are you doing regular maintenance, you know:spark plugs, filters, etc...?

maintenance - yes, the fuel filter, plugs, etc...have all been maintained

Does this happen more in warm weather? it might be a sensor that activates the cold start valve, or the valve itself.

It happens both in warm and cold weather. I've noticed that it happens more often when the engine is warm, however it is common that it happens regardless of weather or engine conditions.

try fuel system cleaner, if no - check fuel preasure.

thanks, I think you are on the right path - after further investigation I now the fuel pump is weak and needs replacement. I'll do that within the next week or two. I've also started using some injector cleaners in the gas to see if this helps.
