Aftermarket Radio

I'm about to lose my mind over these pathetic radios for this car. I have 01 Grand Prix SE. First Radio, display quit (although I did read about replacing the bulb) and then the on/off button stopped working.

I ordered one from Ebay the other day and after installing it, I find that the clock can't be set because the hour and minute buttons do nothing when mashed, no matter how long I hold them down. Also the AM/FM button doesn't work. It's stuck on FM1 and if you're playing a CD, you have to take it out to hear the radio, which I could live with if I had to.

I do not have Onstar or the Bose sound system in this car. Would installing an aftermarket radio in this car be as simple as buying the adaptor and mounting kit since I do not have Onstar and Bose?

I do not know a whole lot about this stuff. I could figure out how to install the radio with an adaptor, but past that, I probably wouldn't try it. Also, is there anyway to get the buttons working on the radio that I got from Ebay before I send it back? If I could set the clock, I wouldn't worry about the Band Selector button.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Aftermarket Radio

Yes, installing an aftermarket radio in your car is as simple as purchasing the correct wiring and mounting adapters. GM didn't go to the data serial bus system which requires relocating the factory radio on GP's until the redesign in 04. Just a note, most installation kits I've seen make the radio stick way out of the dash and IMO look kinda tacky, just so you're aware.

You can take a look at crutchfield and it will give you an idea of what will work in your car. And rich is right the radio does stick out.

Re: Aftermarket Radio

This guy used a different mount type for a different type of vehicle, drilled a hole in it in the correct spot, and made an aftermarket radio fit nicely.

I also used his technique and the same mount that he used in the g/f's GP, and it turned out to fit ok except for a small gap towrads the top which might have just been because I was cold and in a hurry when I was installing it. I had to do a couple slight modifications to it, and sort of had to start both bolts at an angle, but it looks alright.

Maybe if you ask her nicely she'll snap some pictures of it. Lucky girl got it for christmas.... its a pretty (or at least was) spendy newer pioneer unit.
