Best years for 4Runners
Hey All,
Getting ready to buy another used 4Runner (my '95 is going to a new home). Could you "mechanic types" give me your opinion...what are the Best years for 4Runners regarding reliability? Thanks!

I think they'e all reliable, although I would stay away from any one with the 3.0 V6. And there was a couple of years in the 3rd generation that had problems with the rear axle shafts.

Oh yeah, I like the 1st gen because of the removeable top.

I agree the 3.0 isnt that great. The auto transmission is also weak with 3.0 engine. I like the 3.4 V6 96 to 2000 models. They still run and look like new. The auto transmission is their only weakness. http://www.used-4runner.com Mike

Why not 2001-2002? What is the weakness of the transmission in the 3rd gen, or do you mean the lack of a manual is the problem?
