Weirdest/worst work hours you've experienced

As I sit here at in my office at 10:20 a.m. - nearly 10 hours since I got up to return to the confines of this building - I can't help but wonder whether or not anyone else has suffered irregular work hours - or still does - and why.

Myself, I edit a weekly newspaper, which needs to be laid out on Monday and sent to press on Tuesday morning. Therefore, I am in my office quite a bit between those two days. I usually come in at 8:30 on Monday, unless a prior appointment necessitates an earlier arrival, and stay until roughly 5 p.m. Then, I go home until about 12 a.m. and come back and spend from about 12:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at my desk, laying out pages and writing stories as needed.

I'd say the majority of my work week takes place on Monday/Tuesday, considering that I usually work 20 hours between those two days (and I usually take the rest of Tuesday off starting at noon).

So, anyone else have some wacky hours?

Re: Weirdest/worst work hours you've experienced

I have wacky hours once a month (third Tuesday) - I organize a Quality Assurance meeting for nine different groups, which includes nine different power points with about 15 slides each. I am the one that has to find, organize and compile all of this information for this 1.5 hour meeting. I cannot compile any of the information until the first of the month, I also have to wait for much of the information (financial records etc) until the Friday before the meeting.

I am usually here from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm the Friday before, then here from about 6:30 am to 7-8pm the Monday before the meeting getting everything printed and ready for the meeting. Then I arrive about 6:30 am to make sure I have it all together and to set up the room for the meeting at 8am. Then, I can finally breath for the remainder of the month doing odds and ends, then it all starts over again come the 1st.

Show up at 445am and work until 6pm or later. Other times show up at 5pm and work as late as 3am. Nights, weekends and holidays included.

Weirdest I ever had was when I worked at DHL. Had to be there at 3:15a.m and was sent home no later than 9 a. m. It was always weird leaving work and heading home when everyone else was just gettin up and starting their commute.

During the summer I usually work 16 hour days, and a couple hours of sleep. This goes on for six months. The nice part, is over 1000+ hours of overtime, some hazard pay, and of course no life.

Re: Weirdest/worst work hours you've experienced

Absolute worst shift I ever worked was a 24 hour 'guard duty' shift. That sucked so freakin' bad. I haven't volunteered for guard duty since then. After that I just stick with working a regular 11pm to 7am. Now that I can deal with.

I used to work 7am-2pm or as late as 9:30pm driving(my trade that pays). Firefighter 24/7/365 on call, when the pager trips off to work I go.

I work for HP as a field engineer so I have real wacky hours sometimes. Since I have to be on call once in a while I've had to go out at 3 a.m. to fix a server.

Re: Weirdest/worst work hours you've experienced

I worked 46 hours from Friday morning to last night at 4 p.m. I could theoretically take the rest of the week off and still have enough hours.

Sucks, eh? I'm in the same boat. There's nothing like getting up at 4am for a 5am start to recable someone's patch panel.

LOL, I'm in the same boat too. I do a lot of overnighters. Everything from a server swap out and work station migration to a complete IT hardware refresh. 04:00 is the O.K. Or O.S. Point. Okay means support signs off and we go home or Oh Shit means we have to rollback and have the site back up by 08:00. If all goes well you'll be in bed by 03:00, if things go bad you'll see the sun rise.

Re: Weirdest/worst work hours you've experienced

Back in the dark ages, I used to work security from 8pm - 5am then come back at 11am - 6pm to work the day shift (mowing, trimming, dockwork). Crazy stuff, but it paid my way through college and I never had to do that shit again.
