Re: 99 alero 3.4 cruise issue

The cruise on/off buttons are very unreliable. Mine won't stay depressed either, and lots of others have the same problem. You can try to wedge it down by putting a penny or a dime into the gap on the edge. To replace it, the airbag has to be removed. Search here, I think someone has posted directions on how to do it. The problem will be finding a working one for a reasonable price.

Re: 99 alero 3.4 cruise issue

Want a cheap fix. What I did with mine is stuff some small paper around the button and put super glue in the crack, hold it pressed till it's dry. about 5 min. And it will work. It's just going to be on at all times which is no problem for the car. Ive done this 8 months ago and its still good.

Re: 99 alero 3.4 cruise issue

I used a dime jammed in there for a while with mine, but ended up pulling a cruise control switch at a junkyard for $20. The fix was not difficult, just be careful with the airbag and disconnect the fuse. You need long torx drivers for the steering column bolts.

Re: 99 alero 3.4 cruise issue

Welcome to AF.

Another common issue for the cruise control not working is the clock spring assembly which passes the cruise control button signals through the steering column to the cruise control module. Ours went bad and replacing it fixed a similar issue. It would not engage nor would you even get the cruise control light.

BTW - The steering wheel buttons all checked out good.
