Is it possible to airbrush tamiya x & xf paints? If so do I need to thin and to what ratio? What do I use to clean the brush with after?

Thanks for your help.

Though I'm pretty sure this stuff is answered in a list of questions around here somewhere . . . .

Yes, thin with X-20A acrylic thinner (some use water or alcohol, I think - I only use the thinner they make for the paint). There is no ratio per say, it depends on how thin or thick (ie, how old) the paint in the jar is - the classic rule is "thin til it is as thick as milk". You'll have to experiment to get a feel for it.

Clean with same thinner, or better yet window cleaner (Windex, etc), then rinse with water.

As a airplane modeler also, I use the X and XF Tamiya paints plenty. I have good luck with a 1:1 ratio. The help taliesen provided was spot on too.

Tamiya X and XF paints ar fine for brushing or airbrushing! You could thin them with X 20 A thinner or my favorit Mr. Colour Thinner from Gunze. From my experience the paint dryes faster and harder. Is importent to work in thin layers!
For cleaning this paints i take some normal lacquer thinner...

Re: Is it possible to airbrush Tamiya X & XF paints?

Tamiya's acrylic paints, perfect for airbrush, about 1:3 (thinner:paint) works for me, and is easy to clean (do it often, every color change and after every session, don't waste your ab:) - i use 1windex+1simplegreen+2dist.water, or isopropyl alcohol 50:50 with dist.water, whatever works for you
good luck

Re: Is it possible to airbrush Tamiya X & XF paints?

Although X-20A is the thinner meant for Tamiya Acrylics, it actually thins better with Tamiya lacquer thinners (same bottle as X20A but with the yellow top). No idea why the "wrong" thinner works best but it does - gives a much smoother finish without graining.

It isn't as available as the acrylic version and I had to order mine from HK - http://www.luckymodel.com/scale.aspx?item_no=TA%2087077

I've not tried it with Mr thinners but I believe it also works well (there are different types though including a lacquer type).
