front end noise, 2001 GP

Alright, long time reader, 1st time poster. But I had a real loud grinding/whining/friction sound coming from the front end of my 01 GP. What I thought was a bad hub bearing. Car has 115,000 miles, so I went to O'reilly and both two (one for each side). I don't remember the name brand, but they were the "middle of the road" on price. Not the most expensive, but not the cheapest one's either. $130 a piece I believe. But i put them on, and the noise is still there. What else could it be? Could it be the drive shafts? If so, what's all involved with replacing those? Thanks

CK

Sounds like a grinding noise. It is speed drivin. The faster I go, the louder it gets. Throw the car in neutral, the sounds stays the same. Sounds like I have a pair of Off-road tires on the front. Like a loud humming sound. If that makes sense.

Re: front end noise, 2001 GP

I had sort of an issue like that. Turned out to be the tire rubbing on the splash gards. The plastic clips had fallen off and left the gard to rub on the wheel. Mine was the one on the passenger side by the oil filter. Once I added some new clips, its been fine.

If these look good, you may want to have a look at your CV shaft boots. Maybe one cracked and flung grease all over the place. It would be an indicator that the grinding noise could be a bad CV axel.

What brand were your wheel hubs? BCA national maybe? Did your torque the axel nut to the correct spec?

I don't remember what brand it was. The nut was extremely hard to remove, I had to use a breaker bar. So I put it on the same way. I didn't torque it to any specs, I just tightened it as tight as I could get it.

Along with other suggestions, it might be a good idea to check brake rotor temps to make sure they are roughly equal after a drive....

Also I'd rotate tires fronts to backs. I have heard of a tire delaminating around the circumference which didn't cause a blowout but caused strange noises.
