96 GTP Power Steering Troubles need help
I have 96 Gtp with 3.4 ....power steering pump started making noise the other day ..fluid was good just noisy pump....i bought new pump replaced it same thing noisy as hell ..i figured its gotta be another bad pump so i have replaced it with a third one ....no luck third pump still lot of noise ..there is no air in the system no leaks just very noisy.... i tought maybe the switch on the pump for power assist is bad not allowing enough fluid to the rack so i replaced that as well didnt make a difference ... Steeeirng works fine its just very noisy ...my guess would be that rack is no good ...does anyone know if there is another valve in the rack for power asist ...? im about to loose my mind trying to solve this but i have never seen anythign like this before ..Is rack & pinion the same for all model with or without the power assist? or am i looking at something that nobody makes anymore ? any input really appreciated
thanks dom |

Re: 96 GTP Power Steering Troubles need help
My rack blew a seal at the beginning of the summer. I've got variable assist. I remember pricing them out all over the place. They weren't too bad. If I remember right 250-300 with a 100 core charge.
Also if you do replace the R&P at the same time it might be a good decision to replace the power steering hoses. I had to drive my car with a leaky R&P. Once it was replaced, my steering was actually harder and really put load on the engine when I turned side to side. I then replaced the PS pump because I was sure I burned the old one out. Fixed the problem, but the newer (used) Pump was actually making a lot of noise, so I emailed the company who sold me the used pump (ed morad) and they sent me a new-used one free of charge. Problem solved.

Re: 96 GTP Power Steering Troubles need help
Considering you already replaced the power steering pump several times, my suggestion may be irrelevant. But anyways, Lucas makes something that fixes loud power steering. You just mix it in with your power steering fluid, and it takes away most noises. I forget what it's called, but it's made by Lucas, and if you went into your local auto parts store and asked for it they would be able to help you.

Re: 96 GTP Power Steering Troubles need help
It sounds like you have a blockage/restriction if the system was bled properly and you see no foaming of the fluid. It's not impossible that you got another bad pump either, as some of the remanufacturers out there are questionable as to their quality.
