Aircooled GB - '66 beetle #Oldschool# - Tamiya 1/24

First of all, for those not familiar with the Vw aircooled scene, hereunder is a pic of pure Oldschool style with the elements which will be brought to the model as an overview of the final result and paint (Selecta). The only anachronic thing is the modern tach, but, lots of actual Oldschool cars have a 1915cc engine and have this to control it.

Work has started.

I dry fitted the parts to determine what to modify to integrate the Rader wheels (AFXnScale). Cut 4mm in the torsion bars to bring the wheel in, and add 2mm to the drum brake because the tire touches the rear arm.

Stock height.

The spacers behind the brakes.

And the torsion bars shortened with insertion of a steel wire for future assembly of the rear arms

With the spacer on, it doesn't touch the arm anymore

Very nice.
I'd almost forgotten how much fun it was to fit different wheels to the tamiya kit.

Re: Aircooled GB - '66 beetle #Oldschool# - Tamiya 1/24

Big thanks to all of you guys

I know that only seeing Vw's from me may be boring but, one day, I had to make a choice. Vw's (and other cars from the same group) are my real passion since I got my licence. So, when I turned from Figures to Models, the choice was easy. Only build Volkswagen cars, no matter the year or the model. This way, I have a reasonable collection, I don't buy too many models per month and I'm not frustrated by the amount of models I'll never be able to build.
Just some explanations about me

Re: Aircooled GB - '66 beetle #Oldschool# - Tamiya 1/24

As I'm actually stopped on the rear drive train, I started the front beam. I found the perfect technique to have an adjustable height to lower it easily, but instead a long speech pictures speak by themself.

Stock height

Transformation

New height

Nice
...but doesn't your technique therefore mean that the wheels are off-centre to the wheel arches?

Yes, you're right. Before I posted the pics it wasn't so obvious that this technique brings the wheel to the front. I'll then need to cut the drum brake to bring it 1 or 2 mm backwards.

Re: Aircooled GB - '66 beetle #Oldschool# - Tamiya 1/24

Why?? If you really were to drop a Beetle four inches, that's where the front wheels would be. I think it gives a great look of authenticity to be a bit off centre. It doesn't look off at all- it looks ON!

Couldn't agree more Slightly surprised that you didn't narrow the beam slightly as well though.

Cool choice of wheels - haven't seen these on a model before, only in 1:1

Re: Aircooled GB - '66 beetle #Oldschool# - Tamiya 1/24

You're both right too but, let's imagine...

If it were real, to lower it so much, I would have used an adjustable Puma front beam with dropped spindle. This means that the top end of the linking pin wouldn't be that high and then the wheel would stay in the centre.
I've seen hundreds of slammed beetles, also drove some (my back still remembers it ) but never noticed the front wheel going front.

Now, all comments are welcome, and everyone's thought are appreciated. It makes me progress and brings more sense to this project
