'02 GP Remote

Hello,

Daughter purchased a used 2002 Grand Prix, only came with what appears to be a copy key, not OEM key. Does anyone know if there is a check digit in the VIN or any info anywhere to tell if it has keyless remote capability? I greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks, and happy holidays.

Re: '02 GP Remote

I think if you copy down the option codes from a sticker most likely in the glovebox, your dealer can tell you if you have the keyless lock/unlock hardware installed. And then with the VIN number they can sell you the proper keyless fob should it be applicable.

There should be a white rectangular label with a number of 3-place alphanumeric codes on them, most likely in the glovebox...or could be in the trunk too. These are a condensed version of the full summary of options [the "manifest"] that the car was built with from engine (should see L82, LA1, L36 or L67 depending on engine), an "M" code for transmissions, one for axle ratio ("G" I think), another for paint color, etc, etc. It should have the VIN number for making sure the proper sticker goes with the proper chassis sequence number as the car is assembled.

The actual manifest is a large paper printout with big characters echoing the above so that assemblers select the proper parts to correctly build the vehicle.

Re: '02 GP Remote

The best thing to do is contact a local GM dealer and via the VIN they will be able to tell you whether your year and model Grand Prix has the remote keyless entry (RKE) feature. Note: Not all came with RKE from the factory so it may not be supported meaning a RCDLR module and new Body Control Module (BCM) will be needed, etc.

The Service Parts and Identification Label (SPID) is located on the back of the trunk lid or back of the spare tire cover. Look for GM RPO code AU0 or AU8 for the RKE feature.

Also, you can PM me with your VIN and I'll have a VIN check run for you.
