Fuel cutoff dissappearing?

I was driving an almost brand new ford focus over the weekend and was surprised to see the fuel doesn't shut off on the over-run.
Even with foot off the throttle and 4000rpm worth of engine braking, the fuel computer still reads it burning around 2 litres per 100km, which at 100km/h is the same amount of fuel it burns at idle.

Is keeping the cat alight for emissions become so important they can't cut the fuel anymore?

It depends on the car. My 96 chevy will keep injecting for a few seconds, then stop on decel. But my TBI won't ever shut it off. Doesn't matter how many RPMs its turning or how much engine braking, it keeps on squirting.

Yes I've driven plenty of cars that shut down to 0 on any real time fuel usage, but none as new as this one.

Wonder if it's a trend or just a ford thing.

Some other wierd things about that car. No fuel cap. Anyone can open the flap over the fuel filler and push crap past the spring loaded gate and into your fuel tank.
Wind up windows in the back with door trims that hit your knuckles when you try to wind them and a horrendous amount of road noise.

Did handle well on the open road though.

Ford and GM(holden) have been making rental versions of cars like the Focus and commonwhore for sometime now.

Wind up windows save costs and no fuel cap means nothing to lose.

Yeah it was a rental.
I've heard ford are doing the same missing fuel cap on their falcons now. I'll have to drive past the dealer and check for myself.

If you want to buy a diesel focus here (1.8tdi) they come with wind up rear windows and single disc cd player.
Budget isn't just restricted to the rentals.
