Blend Door Actuator

My '98 GS w/ automatic thermostat control is blowing cold on the driver side & hot on passenger.
I've tried disconnecting battery w/ A/C off a couple of times hoping for recalirbration correction, but no luck so far.
Starting to think it's a blend door actuator.
Would sure like a procedure for replacement if anyone has one. With pictures is even bettter. I think getting access to it is probably the hard part.
I looked at the part on Rock auto and curiously, the one for a manual A/C is $35, while for auto is $133, even though they look exactly the same. Maybe just generic illustrations.
Any tips on saving $ would be appreciated.

Re: Blend Door Actuator

Your issue sounds like the temperature actuator for the driver's side. It is located on the left side of the center of the dash to the right of the steering column. All you need to do is remove the kick panel and then go at it from underneath. Tight fit in there and it will be a PITA. By varying the driver's side temperature on the automatic climate control unit (ACC) you should see the actuator move. Also, the reference voltage should be checked to make sure it is good from the climate control head unit. In some cases the actuator turns out good and all the CJ2 ACC needs is a reprogramming job done by the dealership.

bnaylor:
Thanks for the reply.
Plan to start taking things apart this weekend to try and fix this. It's pretty aggravating. Even with the unit OFF there is some heat on the passenger side.
Is the kick panel you mention the surround that encloses the HVAC control panel? How is it removed?
Since the driver's side will switch from cold to hot but the pass side is hot only, could that mean that the pass side actuator might be the culprit?
Also, where do you check the reference voltage? What should it be?
Thanks again.
