Talking Not one, not two...but THREE Mopar products slain by Honda!

1 Cruising home from work at about 70-75MPH the other night on I-17 here in Phoenix, I see these bright-blue HID wannabes coming up pretty fast behind me on the lane just to my left. As he passes, I recognize the car as a black Dodge Avenger. It had a dual-tip DTM exhaust, and low, definitely not stock wing...lowered on rims (of course). Overall, pretty tastefully done. A couple of hints of stickers, but they were all small.

Anywho, I get behind him, not trying to race or anything, just going his speed so I can get home faster.

Kid sees MY wannabe HID lights and fogs and...well...(I think you can guess what he did). AFTER we had clearance in front of us. At least he knew that much.

So, as I see him pulling, I downshift to third. At the top of third, I was pulling around his right-rear quarter-panel (not fast-like, but more like steady and deliberate...c'mon, it's not a Mustang:finger: ). Shift to fourth, we're pretty much even. Top of fourth, I've walked him by about 1 1/2 cars. At that point (about 125MPH), I decided to shut it down and just to make it official (read: rub it in), I flashed my hazards. He exited shortly afterwards, and I followed him so I can turn around and go back the other way on the freeway (passed my exit racing...about 4 exits before...had to find clear freeway to race, we did). He was pretty cool...talked to him at the light at the exit...I was going left, he was going right. Just found his statement..."I just need a couple of more things to beat your car!" kinda funny. He had the V6, by the way. I had to make sure of that.

2 So, I turned around and went southbound on I-17. Cruising a little bit higher than I normally do (about 80-85MPH). I was hungry, and adrenaline was making me hungrier.

I see headlights flying past my car. I see that it is a Plymouth Reliant. For those that don't know what that is, it is a VERY boxy-looking car from the 80's, I think. At first, I didn't want to bite, because I also see that he has stopped just slightly ahead of me and to the left, revving, apparently to wait for me. I was thinking to myself "what has this guy got?". I've seen a video of one these cars (highly-modified, turbo-motor) smoke a Supra at the track. So I figured what the hell...well see what he's so hype about.

I get in front of him by virtue of him getting stuck behind another car. I wait for him. As he starts pulling next to me, I downshift to third in an exact imitation of what I did with the Avenger. Well...it wasn't pretty. At the top of fourth, I was at least 10 cars ahead. He tried again a couple of times with the same results, until I had to exit.

3 This morning, on my way to school, I am at a light intending to go straight to the freeway access road directly across from the light. This Dodge Intrepid (98-up) pulls-up to my left. I knew he was going to gun it as soon as he pulled up where he did.

The intersection I'm on had 4 lanes at this point. far left is where you go to merge on the freeway. Far right is a right-turn only lane. I was in the lane to the left of the right-turn lane going straight to the access road. The lane the Intrepid was in is basically the lane you go into if you want to outrun either the person to your left merging into the freeway, or to your right, who's going into the access road.

Sure enough, light turns, guy steps on it. I was ready, though. Although I didn't launch, I did get on it pretty quickly, and ran it to redline 1st and 2nd gears, giving good, solid shifts with the short-throw every time. By the time about a quarter-mile passed, at the point where you have to make a choice whether you're gonna go into the freeway, or try to merge with the cars going into the access road, I was about 3/4 of car ahead of him, at which point he gave up and got behind me. This surprised me, since I have never gone up against any Intrepids before, and thought they were quicker than that. He tailgated me the rest of the way on the one-lane access road, though...even though at that point we were the only cars there...but oh well, I'd be mad too if somebody foiled my plans that early in the morning (6:45 AM).

I know, I know...not some of Chrysler's best examples of automotive engineering. But hey, I still only do have a 1997 Civic LX SOHC-NON-VTEC .

Good runs, carrnutt. ^_^

Though you do realize if that box had been one of the dreaded GLH Omnis you would have been toast. Carrol Shelby didn't say that they "Go Like Hell" for nothing.

I know. If that thing flew by me, I wouldn't have been surprised.
Good thing it was just your run-off-the-mill 80's rattle-trap!

If I am remembering correctly, it's a d16yb, with the throttle-body feeding directly into the intake runners instead of through a tube collector.
