Cooling fan question

'99 CVPI - My cooling fan shuts off with the ignition, and won't come back on unless I start the engine again. Aren't these supposed to keep running if the engine is hot after the ignition is shut down?

I've heard there might be a sensor/switch in a cyl head that is bad? where? what is it called?

Re: Cooling fan question

I think the fans are supposed to shut off when power is turned off. I will have to check at the shop to be sure. If I can remember, I will run one till it gets hot and shut it off. But I am almost positive the fan will stop with ignition off.

Re: Cooling fan question

Thanks w2o! I was not sure either, but did find some temp controller sensors/switches in Auto Zones website. One was for A/C operation so I know that's wrong; but there was another that didn't indicate it's purpose. (TU241) A/Z's parts are:
Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor part # SU2188,
Cooling Fan Switch - Radiator (Pressure switch AirConditioning Pressure) part # MT0491
Duralast Temprature switch Part # TU241
Duralast / Coolant Temperature Sensor Part # SU284

They also list 4 ‘aftermarket’ fan controllers, but I don’t think I want to get into that bucket of worms. I’m not having any overheating problems now, (I have in the past few weeks but found a burnt out High speed relay, Also, I can’t seem to get the low speed side to kick in) but it just seems strange that any other type vehicle with electric fans will continue to operate if the engine is at a temp that requires it, but Ford won’t.
