URGENT HELP NEEDED!!paint job is...

hi,

i am building on the gtr...right now painting the body...started off with primer, then acrylic white....everything was nice and smooth until i used zero 2k clear....i have used this clear b4 without problems....but this time.... it made wrinkle patterns on the surface...its not even orange peel...its like 100x worse than OP...more like wrinkles....
i have some pics of the looks of it.... well after that clear coat...i sanded it back down and primed it again....but that wrinkles come back....im wondering what went wrong...the only thing i could suspect is that i used an old tamiya acrylic container to mix my clear coat...which was NOT washed and cleaned...but just fully dried....ive mixed the clear according to the instructions so the mixture should be fine, though after mixing the colour was milky white rather than clear...
anyway pics below and appreciate for help....

How long did you let primer, base coat, and clear dry for?

Have you used the 2k on acrylics before? I think it's a bit to hot for acrylics but if you've done it before I have no clue to why it went like this.

I have the same kind of surprises from time to time with my paint jobs.
I have only used the 2k-clear on Zero's primer and base coat before so I really don't know what happend here for you?

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED!!paint job is...

yea ive always used them on acrylic b4...and went all smooth....i think the clear mixture this time somehow got contaminated...and by the looks it seems theres air within the paint causing it to pop up....maybe some experts out there can tell me the cause of it....
the clear mixture this time looked weird...its milky colour..b4 it was always "clear"...maybe i need to clean out my mixing tools before hand...

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED!!paint job is...

I seriously doubt the problem is anything more than the fact your clearcoat was too strong for the paint below it, regardless of whether there was some slight contamination in the mixing bottle. This is a classic case of "lifting", when a top coat damages the paint below it. This is exactly what will happen to enamel paint if overcoated with lacquer, for example. So what if it didn't happen before? You applied three completely different kinds of paint and this is what can and will happen eventually. Stick with one brand, or stick with paints that are always compatible. Acrylic color coat? Use acrylic clear and this won't happen.

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED!!paint job is...

The 2K is acrylic but it's automotive acrylic.Much more aggressive than any hobby acrylic. You can tell this from the smell alone, it's so much more potent than say Tamiya acrylic.I always try to keep with paints that are compatible, like for like.Lacquers with lacquers, enamels with enamels etc. That way you shouldn't have any problems. What paint did you use for the white? Was it a hobby type acrylic?
I think I would strip it off and start again. The Zero Pure White is excellent stuff, if you want a nice clean and crisp white.

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED!!paint job is...

the white was a zero paint white...that one is acylic aswell but not sure how strong it is....maybe ive just overdone the clear....prbly i need to do a few more mist coats to ensure the bottom layer of clear makes a good foundation before doing the wet coat as indicated from the instructions...

oh and th primer was was tamiya fine surface white...if its any use as info \

thnx

I always use the Tamiya surface primers, Zero base coats and Zero clears together as you state you did and I've never had that wrinkly reaction that you have experienced here.Must be some kind of reaction, too much thinner in the clear maybe? Too thick a coat of clear? Not sure really, it puzzles me I must admit.........?

Re: URGENT HELP NEEDED!!paint job is...

I have always known not to use enamels and lacquers over acrylics, but with patience it can be done with VERY light coats. Not recommended though.

I have only had this lifting happen on one model...well other than the thousands of bodies I've stripped over the years, haha. I found that it was simply because I didn't sand the primer, so the color coat wasn't adhering to the primer well enough to withstand the flash over of the clear coat. I stripped the body, primered, sanded with 400 grit, then paint as normal...everything turned out great.
