I believe that I have a bad valve seals. Does the head have to be removed to replace them?

Mr. Idea guy...

If your valve seals are bad, you most likely get a nice big cloud of blue smoke when you start up your car when it is cold.

I would recommend removing the head...it is SOOOO much easier...a head gasket costs about $25, and the seals are about $5/each if I remember correctly. who knows what shit will get dropped in the motor if you do it on the car

What are you smoking? You think removing the head is easier than simply opening the valve cover?
He obviously has higher mileage, the smart thing to do would be to take the head off and buy a rebuilt one, but if you do that you might as well go on and rebuild the rest of the engine because with a new head the bottom end will not hold up.

No you dont have to remove the head, but if you do you might as well rebuild the whole motor while your in there...other than the head its only a bit of time to drop the pan, pop out the pistons and rering them....but your spending way more money than just valve seals with the head on the motor still....

The motor isnt high mileage. I think that someone put the cam in wrong and didnt torque them right and it fucked up the seals. Or they re-ringed it and it blew them out.
So what I am going to do it take the head off my old motor have it ported and polished and new valve seals put in it a place in a neighoring town does it dirt cheap and does a great job.

Take the head off, sure its more work but u wont regret it, u can check your pistons and cylinder walls while your at it. and also if u break a valve seal and a little bit falls into a combustion chamber u'll hafta take the head off anyways so it'll save time incase something falls down accidentally, and also you can check your valves to make sure there not charred or cracked. its a much better idea to take the head off IMO
