Freedom Fry's

Quote:
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The cafeteria menus in the three House office buildings will change the name of "french fries" to "freedom fries," a culinary rebuke of France, stemming from anger over the country's refusal to support the U.S. position on Iraq.
Ditto for "french toast," which will be known as "freedom toast."

The name changes were spearheaded by two Republican lawmakers who held a news conference Tuesday to make the name changes official on the menus.

Across the country, some private restaurants have done the same.

"This action today is a small, but symbolic effort to show the strong displeasure of many on Capitol Hill with the actions of our so-called ally, France," said Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, the chairman of the Committee on House Administration.

Ney, whose committee has authority over the House cafeterias, directed the change, after colleague Walter Jones, R-North Carolina, circulated a letter suggesting such a move.

"I represent a district with multiple military bases that have deployed thousands of troops," Jones said in a statement. "As I've watched these men and women wave good-bye to their loved ones, I am reminded of the deep love they have for the freedom of this nation and their desire to fight for the freedom of those who are oppressed overseas," Jones said in a statement. "Watching France's self -serving politics of passive aggression in this effort has discouraged me more than I can say."

France has pressed the United Nations to give weapons inspectors more time in Iraq, saying the U.S. and British-led move to war is premature.

Its stance has angered some U.S. lawmakers.

Rep. Jim Saxton, R-New Jersey, has introduced legislation in the House that would block any French company from receiving U.S. government aid or financing in any reconstruction of Iraq. Another measure discourages American tourists, businesses and the government from participating in the 2003 Paris Air show.

Just shows how many American's are angered by France's stance to ally itself with Iraq. Liquor stores here in my area which is not surrounded by liberals or poseysniffers or even one military base have stopped carrying French Wines. The only French resturant in town has now become a mexican food resturant.

Exclamation

MMMMhhhh, not very smart these reactions... I think some American people are exagerating because the situation is not a war between France and the USA but more between many countries (and France, Germany, Russia, etc. too !) and Iraq. But there's only a different point of view regarding the means to employ to "fire" Saddam.

The reactions are typical here in the US where so many men have fallen for France's rescue in WW2. Also remember it was at first the French that engaged the VeitCong and when defeated the US went in and lost tons of men there as well. We may have lost the conflict but we won the battles. The US is by nature unforgiving of any country in which we previously came to their rescue. We lead the way for the Liberation of France only to be snubbed many times since then. We've been refused overfly rights more times then I can count. I personally have nothing against the French people. As a matter of fact its one of the countries I plan to visit one of these days. Like so many from other countries that dislike President Bush I simply dislike their leadership.

The 'anti-French' attitude is lame. It's a feeble response to target one country for failing to crawl up Bush's butt when there are more counties that oppose this invasion than support it.This kind of childish singling out for abuse is a classic bullying technique.
Go one, hate on France all you like, they probably don't give a stuff.

And as for 'freedom' fries.........how pathetic.NOBODY ELSE CALL THEM FRENCH FRIES ANYWAY.It's an American idiom.Change it to'depleted-uranium' fries for all I care.

And I prefer your "french fries" called "freedom fries" (as for the toast, etc.) because it has nothing to deal with the french cooking !

Seriously, Americans came in 1944 to free Europe from the Nazi. And there are many "American cimetery" mainly in Britain (West of France where the "D Day" occured) and French people are great to the Americans for that.... even if the Americans had to do it (they had also their profits of course, and that's normal).
But we could also remember you that it was Lafayette who made the USA independant... ok, we can remember history, I don't think it's pertinent.

>"As a matter of fact its one of the countries I plan to visit one of these days" : funny, it's like a guy who says that he has a black friend to say that he's not racist

I don't think it's necessary to repeat it, but Frenchs like Americans and we're friends for long, so I think that this crisis is really stupid and wouldn't be so big.

Yes I will Visit France one day. Probably to once again rescue them from themselves. I'm not racist in the least. I am however unforgiving of people who consider themselves above the US when it was the US that has interceded many times on their behalf. We continue to be the strongest nation on this planet and it will always be that way. Freedom is one thing we cherish above all else. The US has been the leader in many many more ways then just military might. As for French Cooking I'll take Italian! anyday

You seem quite vehement...
Though, I think (if you're not kidding)à that your history knowledge is relatively limited, French people help American against the English, as Americans help us against the Nazis...

The USA is the strongest country in the world, that's a fact. But if you consider the EU as a country, that's not so clear. Indeed, economically speaking, we're at least equal, except from a military point of view (where we're almost hopeless mainly compared with your country).
And I think it's more smart to compare the EU to the USA (300 Millions of inhabitants vs 280 Millions) than the USA to France (280 M/62M !).

>"We continue to be the strongest nation on this planet and it will always be that way" : you seem very confident.... if you don't want to compare the USA and the EU, you're maybe right (except for the future, we can't predict it). But again, if you compare EU and USA... look at the €uro vs US$ (1€ = US$ 1,10) though, all Americans were joking about this new currency.

My knowledge of early american history is quite extensive. Yes I'm very aware of the French assisting us against the English. However they were also out for guarentees of trade with the US and there is nothing at all wrong with that. As far as the EU goes to me it has every appearance of being a smaller version of the UN dedicated to Europe soley to compete with the US. However since there is really not much talked about as far as the EU is concerned over here I'll grant you that I have little knowledge of what its basis is.
