Talking Newbie fuel filter question?

First off i would like to say hello to all of the forum memebers. Next I have a small problem with my 1997 328i. When starting it this morning it began to sputter immediatly after starting then died. After a couple of attempts I was able to keep it running and make it to work. My car has about 100,000 mile and I am sure it is in dire need of an fuel filter change. Where in the world is the thing located? I am very new to working on BMW's, as it is mainly my wifes car. I work on my jeep regularly(insert any jokes here). So i feel that my mechanical abilities will be suffecient enough to handle this small task. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I changed the fuel filter on my 1996 320i recently and the filter is under the car on the lefthand side about the middle of the front door.
