making a supercharger
hey my friend wants to buy a supercharger for his car and it costs like 2k but only puts out like 4 psi. my question is how hard is it to make your own supercharger? i mean if i do some research i could base the one we make off an already existing one. or is it just way to much work?

Re: making a supercharger
Do you have a high accuracy machine shop in your basement and an endless supply of aircraft aluminum stock? If the answer is "no," it's probably too much work to try to make your own. Plus you'll have to figure out the tuning to compensate for the added air. On a computerized car that won't be a simple task, but is hopefully part of the $2k system.

Re: making a supercharger
BTW there have been several threads here at AF on substitutes for superchargers, including electric fans of various kinds and (my personal favourite) big gas-powered leaf blowers.
The consensus is all those substitutes can move air, but cannot compress it...... so they will not work. |

Secondly, asking this question is kinda like saying, "should I build a small block chevy, or should I custom design my own V8 engine from scratch?" The $2k you spend on a supercharger is the culmination of 50 years of research and development by experts in the field. There is NO way to duplicate that with a fan, leaf blower, or bicycle pump. Spend the $2k, tweak it, and capitolize on the millions of hours that millions of owners have already spent gaining experience from their blowers.

Re: making a supercharger
Adapting an existing unit might be feasible, depending on your 'fabbing ability. I fitted a Mercedes-app Eaton m62 blower to my car, and for under a grand I was up & running. It's not the prettiest thing on the road, but it is a real improvement over stock.
What car/motor are we talking about here?
