Poping sound from rear end

Today when I was backing out of a driveway with my car in reverse of course and I put it into drive. Then I saw a car coming up behind me so I accelerated rather quickly and heard a loud popping sound coming from my rear end. Does anyone have any suggestions on what caused it? What should I do? Is this something to be concerned with? I have experienced this one other time when I did the same thing after backing out of a parking space. There isnt a huge jerking when this happens, just a loud noise and a slight jerk.

Thanks

I've done so many ass jokes, I'll let this one go.

I'm really not sure what that could be unless you were in 4wd. If it can be reproduced maybe have the dealer take a shot at it.

I can only think of the LSD, or leaf springs/shocks (small chance). There really aren't many things that would do that back there.

Might check your driveshat U-joints. you can get under your truck and twist the shaft...if it's tight you're OK, if there is a lot of play your joints(s) are gone.

I looked at the driveshaft and it is tight and wont budge. I don't have an LSD so that couldnt be the problem. Also I'm sure I was two wheel drive so if anyone else has any ideas let me know

did you checked too see if you're parking brake was totally disengaged that could make the car "jerk" if it was partially engaged and also pop if you were trying to accelerate to fast with it on,

it could happen:smoker2:

Thanks for all the help, but Im sure that I didnt have the parking break on, because I had been driving for a half hour, pulled in the driveway, and noticed nobody was home, so i backed out and left again.

Well, you have a 2002 so you have to be under warranty, especially the powertrain one. I would just go to the dealer and have them do a once over.

The only other thing would be the leaf springs or their mounts. Is the spare tire tight against the body? I'm just trying to think of anything that could be loose and pop with a sudden change in direction
