Why do I always need so much paint?

I work with Tamiya´s cans. I painted my Subaru Impreza with 2 cans, my VeilSide Silvia with 1,5 cans. Why? Today I sprayed the first layer on a Pick-Up and the can is nearly empty and I don´t understand why? The sprayed layer is covering everything, no primer could be seen.

You're applying waaay too much paint.
You're not meant to cover everything completely with the first coat, mist coats to start.....then when you have covered with 3 or 4 mist coats, wet coat.....

Can someone describe "mist coat"

I hear "mist coat" a lot, and I've even tried it on my Porsche, but I don't understand exactly what that means. Does it mean not spraying directly on the car, spraying from farther away, what?

I'd like to hear more on how to do mist coats.

Thanks!

You spray quite away from the model so that the paint is only just landing on the model. You should be able to still "see though" the paint in places on the model after the first coat

Mist coats dont seem to work very well when airbrushing acrylics. The wetcoats can't redissolve the rough surface of the mistcoats and causes bad orange peel.

I always use 2 cans of paint. If I try to use 1, I can still do the paint job, but I buy 2 just to be sure I'm not gonna run out of paint like I sometimes do.
