What to expect for gas mileage?

I have a '95 Toyota 4-runner with a 3.0 engine. It is giving me 15 m.p.g. with little hiway travel, some rough dirt roads, some 4X4 and rural traffic. All mileage is put in under or at the speed limit. Can I do better than this? I owned a Buick Century Wagon up until last November when some bozo in a big truck rear ended and totalled it. The Century was giving me 22 or more m.p.g. and it had the same sized engine and was of the same year. In fact, my Toyota engine was recently rebuilt. When they did this they didn't replace the wires and I assume they did replace the plugs. Otherwise, I've made sure it has been tuned properly. I also keep the tires correctly inflated. Should I expect better mileage? Can I do something else to improve it? I know that I'm not alone in this quest.

Re: What to expect for gas mileage?

Hey I just bought a 95 4runner 4x4 sr5 v6 3.0 2 weeks ago with 168,000 miles and I to get poor mileage about 12-13 in town and don't know about hwy miles yet.I have read a lot of post and also consumer reoprts about this 4runner.The results are....bad gas mileage no matter what a tune up would help but were stuck ....but I do love my 4runner and will keep it...how bout you?

Re: What to expect for gas mileage?

Sad to say, this vehicle can't get much more than 15mpg. i think i read it in the FAQs section, but many mods have been tried with little to no success. in fact many people will compliment 15mpgs!

Re: What to expect for gas mileage?

My '93 got 23 mpg highway, with 2 40+ lbs. downhill bikes on a rack on back.
I havent measured it in town, but i would bet i get no less than 16.

Re: What to expect for gas mileage?

No way 23mpg with a V6!
I would bet you get no more than 16 mpg too.
The V6 is and always will be a guzzler. the absolute best I ever could get was 18mpg on the hi-way in cruise control on a new engine.
Anyone talking more is just talking nothing more.

23 MPG from a 3.slo is real hard to believe.

I tested it again, in town it gets around the 15 but highway i still get 20 21. I think the 23 was a fluke cause by a lot of downhill driving or something, never happened after that first tank. After many tanks of gas my average always comes out 18-19.8 depending on how much city/highway i do with the exception of when i crawl a lot and get in the single digits.
