Part Number: FPMS95536 all that is needed for the UIM & LIM on VIN M 3100?
Hi,
I was wondering if for a 1994 pontiac grand prix Vin M all that is needed besides the valve cover gaskets is the: Part Number: FPMS95536 which looks like it has the rtv sealer and the lower intake manifold gasket as well as the upper?? I dont see a listing for the lower intake manifold gasket, is the reason i was asking. thanks in advance, Dan |

Welcome to AF.
Referring to the FelPro brand gasket kits? The MS95536 gasket kit has the UIM and LIM gaskets plus RTV sealer. Also, FelPro has the premium gasket set which has the valve cover gaskets and other seals, PN: MS98004T.

What numbers do you have Tim?
Should be MS98004T. VIN 'M" 3.1L. Also, I have PN: MS95535 for the basic UIM/LIM gasket set which is cheaper than the complete premium set.

I have no numbers Bob, just wondering....
For some reason I thought vin M was the old style 3.1mpi and not the new 3100sfi. Whats the vin code for that motor?

Re: Part Number: FPMS95536 all that is needed for the UIM & LIM on VIN M 3100?
FYI, for clarification, here's the correct part numbers:
MS95535 hs been discontinued, replaced by the MS95536. The MS95536 is the OEM style plastic gaskets. The MS98004T is FEl-Pro's improved design metal framed gasket kit that also includes the valve cover gaskets (the MS95536 does not include VC gaskets which are necessary to do the job unless you want to re-use the old ones). Here's where it get's a little dicey. Fel-Pro's catalog lists the MS98004T fitting the 93-95 ball and pivot rocker arm equipped 3100-M's, but there have been some fitment issues regarding the center port shape on these engines. Make sure you compare the port shape with the OEM gasket and/or test fit it to the head before proceeding. The MS98004T does fit all 95-later Vin-M 3100's with the roller rocker arm design with no porblems. Since the later Vin-J 3100 was also mentioned, although not applicable to this car, it uses the Fel PRo MS98003T set.

Thanks for the replies,
I was asking the question as i totally got shafted by autopartswarehouse.com (The same as) partstrain.com I called to see if they had the all in one gasket set Bnaylor refers to (PN: MS98004T.) and the guy who said i can just take your order over the phone sent me wrong parts for like the 3.4 engine and crap even though it said grand prix....long story short now i have to send back the gaskets.... @Richtazz is there any benefit to using the metal gasket as opposed to the OEM style plastic ones?MS98004T vs MS95536? I also got reman. injectors, & pcv valve, and was wondering about the distributor dummy shaft o-ring...I am definitely going to a local shop this time and DO NOT RECOMMEND going online unless absolutely necessary...what seems like a good deal turned out to be a nightmare, I mean you'd think all parts would be for a VIN M engine and instead they are sending me crap I dont need. |

Bob,
Nope, that gasket will fit, but I can't remember what the difference is between the MS95535 and MS95536 other than the price. I think the MS95535 doesn't include the upper plenum gaskets, but don't quote me on that.

Re: Part Number: FPMS95536 all that is needed for the UIM & LIM on VIN M 3100?
Danman47, the MS98004T is a far superior gasket to the OEM plastic design, but note my issue with using it in 93-94 spec VIN-M 3100's in post #7 of this thread. If the center port is the same shape, then use the MS98004T. The metal framed gasket addresses an issue where the OEM plastic frame cracks at the coolant transfer ports causing coolant to contaminate the oil. If the center port doesn't match, then you need to use the MS95536 and separate valve cover gasket set VS50442R. The o-ring for the oil pump is part number 70800, and I would also install a 70194 paper gasket between the top of the block and the shaft as added insurance against future leaks.

Re: Part Number: FPMS95536 all that is needed for the UIM & LIM on VIN M 3100?
@richtazz, will it be blatently obvious where i need to put the rtv sealant on the sides of the lower intake? Also Id like to replace the distributor dummy shaft o-ring any-any idea where this is?
Also besides keeping the pushrods in the exact order/position is there anything else I should be on the look out for as i did drive the car for about a week when it had the lifter knocking/ticking noise. As in should i be prepared to change lifters and what not? Do i keep same torque specs as in the chiltons manual? 1. Coat the threads of the lower intake manifold bolts with sealant 245739 or equivalent. Position the lower intake manifold and secure with the retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts104 inch lbs. (2 Nm). |

Re: Part Number: FPMS95536 all that is needed for the UIM & LIM on VIN M 3100?
The torque value depends on what gasket set you end up using. The specs should be in the box, so follow them.
Make sure you clean the old thread-lock off the intake bolts, and re-apply blue loctite when re-installing. The oil pump drive is in the center of the block on the driver's side below the throttle body. It is approx 1-1/2" round, and is held in by a bracket and a 13mm headed bolt. It's not technically part of an intake job, but it is a common oil leak on these engines and much easier to do with the intake plenum/throttle body out of the way.

Re: Part Number: FPMS95536 all that is needed for the UIM & LIM on VIN M 3100?
I finally started the job, i got the fuel injectors changed out, but had to stop at getting the rear valve cover bolt off due to the ignition coil bracket posts being in the way and i couldnt get any of my sockets on the valve cover bolt. I will have to buy a 1/4" ratchet and a socket set that fits this bolt tighter as the 5/16" is a bit too loose and i dont want to round off the bolthead.
Anyone ran into this problem or have an exact fit socket for this valve cover bolt? |

On the rear valve cover, rear bolt on the driver's side, a thin walled 1/4" socket will get it out, or you can remove the stud that the ICM/coil packs attach to with a reverse torx socket that will grab the end of the stud. It's an E-6 or E-8 size I believe.
