1/4 scratch built interior design project
Hi guys
Well some of you may know I am currently designing a car interior for my final major project. I am also currently buiding a 1/4 scale model. Some of you may remmber I posted a few early shots on the main forums, when I was asking about 1/2 accessories. Well I thought I'd give you a little teaser of things to come, its coming together and shld be finished in 3 weeks well cos the deadline is in 3 weeks lol. Anyways below is the steeringing wheel, from finished design to full 3d alias model to the manufactured part. Its yet to be painted and built but u get the idea. THE DESIGN ![]() THE CAD 3D MODEL ![]() THE RAPID PROTOTYPED COMPONENTS (TOOK ABOUT 20HRS TO PROTOTYPE!) ![]() ![]() The design was ment to represent the currently design direction Merc is taking but to take it further and add a twist, i.e. The parts came out great but need some sanding and smoothing before primer goes down. but the detail is amazingly accurate check out the merc badge that is exact 1/4 scale to real thing and exact shape etc.... Ill post mode pics after I get the seats back from the prototypers the design will blow u guys away! comments welcome as usual be it bad or good. |

Re: 1/4 scratch built interior design project
Hi
thks for the great comments A little update The tub is gettings there hope to have that finished on tuesday and get primer on it wednesday. The seats were finsihed off last week in 3D I should have them back from the rapid prototypers on tuesday Ill have pictures up then hopefully I know they look uncomfortable but please remmber this is ment to be a concept thats abit crazy. The design: ![]() In 3D: ![]() The seats cost me a fortune, even though a company is partly sponsering my project I still had to shell out £700 for all 4 seats, (total cost £2000) Who said scale modleing was cheap lol! Anyways its all towards a better grade I guess so was happy to pay glad I didn't have to pay the 2 grand. 2 weeks to go My leather should arrive by next weekend too! Will update mid week Thks The 3D model |

Re: 1/4 scratch built interior design project
Indeed the seats look uncomfortable, but they do make sense. Not placing material where it won't get used. Is this kind of seat sort of tested as in if it really supports those places like you described? Because no matter how uncomfortable they may look, they do look somehow ergonomic correctly shaped. And they are beautiful as they are unique. (Well unique... you made 4 of them... :P).
Keep on posting progress, I really like to see this project come to a perfect finish. |

I'm expecting questions like that to come up during my presentation, but no I have not tested them (i havn't the means). My argument is that this is a concept that is designed to push the thinking of seat design, for sure they may not be as comfortale as regular seats but the idea is there! After serious user testing trails combined with ergonomic development I'm sure they could work and be as comfortable. My main aims were to remove unused material, and reducing the component count for the seats which in turn would be benifical when the product came to the end of its lifecycle. Another major aim was to stop people sitting in the seats incorrectly, i.e. slouching and fake gangstar bullshit driving positions, this way people would have to sit correctly so that they would get the required support and also be in the correct position so that incase of an accident the airbag systems would work efficently! But end of the day its all theory I appreciate the positive comments, glad to hear that people think they look good! no point designing ugly stuff now is there! thks |

Re: 1/4 scratch built interior design project
Wow, they look great! I'm of the thinking they look a bit like something Jesse James of West Coast Choppers would build for a trike or something. I think a bare bones trike with some wicked seats like that would look freakin' radical!
I am absolutely in love with the rapid prototyping. I haven't had the chance to use it, and probably never will, but think of the opportunities for the resin casters! I have GOT to get in on this action. The parts you've already made look fabulous. I WANT MORE!! haha
