Trailer hitch?

How are the bolts put in on vehicles with closed frames? I'm installing a trailer hitch on my Grand Am, and don't see how I'm going to do it. I put one on my Beretta, but since it's junk anyway I just drilled all the way through into the trunk which isn't an option on this car. Also, I believe there are hydraulic bumpers that run into the frame (there were on my Beretta ), so clearance inside may be an issue as well.

Thanks

Re: Trailer hitch?

I have seen vehicles that have a hitch that is clearly bolted onto a frame with no way to get to the nut on the inside. Anyone here install hitches?

Re: Trailer hitch?

All of the hitches I've bought came with provisions to fish the bolts/nuts inside. I put one on an F150 that had the nut welded to a piece of flat steel that not only let you slide it the nut in from the back to the appropriate hole, but it prevented the nut from spinning as you put the bolt in.

I put on on a Chevy Caprice that had a little cable on the bolts so you could fish them into the proper hole. It was a carriage bolt that came with a large washer that prevented it from spinning in the frame.

Other cars sometimes have bolts or nuts already in the frame.
