EGR Valve Disassembly

I recently posted a problem with my '99 GP GT where the "Change Oil Soon" light comes on briefly during startup, but goes out after a few minutes. The suggested remedy was cleaning the pintle on the EGR valve. Just to make sure I'm not going to do any damage - will removing the screw on the underside face of the EGR valve allow me to disassemble the unit?

I appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Hmm im having the exact same issue and i did have a DTC related to closed pintle on the EGR once. If someone has a guide on this thatd be perfect! Bnaylor thought i had a PCM issue possibly. Funny thing is i have a 1999 GP gt aswell :O!

Thats a good one. How was that determination made and who suggested doing that? How will the EGR valve cause a "Change Oil Soon" problem? If your EGR valve was not working properly you would get a DTC stored related to EGR and a SES/CEL light, especially if it is stuck open or closed or out of range in performance. Also, the EGR is not tested or even used during initial startup. Certain parameters have to be met.

Here's the original post.

Do you have any suggestions on how to clear this light? The normal process doesn't work.

Again, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

wow strangely enough look it was a post i made too! now what he ment was that the EGR code would be cleared by cleaning the EGR valve, not the change oil light as far as i can tell. Ps i didn't have to change or clean the EGR anyways i took out the code and it worked fine since.

Still have the oil light on for the first couple mins of driving.

Re: EGR Valve Disassembly

I probably didn't read the post as thoroughly as I should have. I've not had a code, just the light. I can live with the light, just concerned that something could be going on there that could cause damage if not taken care of.

Re: EGR Valve Disassembly

Strange problem but it does happen. The whole process is controlled by the PCM module including setting off the oil change light at the DIC and the reset process to include keeping the light off. All I can say is there is a glitch someplace associated with the PCM module. For example if I use my DHP Powertuner and reflash the PCM module to store the new settings the oil life monitor must be reset. The only other option is further diagnosis with a GM Tech II scan tool where the oil life monitoring system can be checked but that will require taking it into the local GM dealership.
