well, my '99 GT w/ 73K is having some major issues...
I'll start with the whole story...i bought the car apx. 3 months ago for $600, it was in a light accident. the guy fixed the front end, drove it around for about a month then the tranny went south. i bought the car from him and found a used tranny w/ 51K on it for $300.00 i put the tranny in the car, and have been driving it around for 3 months with absolutly no problems. the car shifted excellent and everything yesterday just out of nowhere...it started acting really weird, it would slip really bad into 2nd gear, so i checked the tranny fluid and it was just about a quart low...no problem, so i go buy tranny fluid, fill it up and drive it again. it ran just fine untill it warmed up, then i completely lost ALL gears except first and reverse. when i am driving down the road from a complete stop it will start off just fine, then the RPM's will go all the way up to 4K and still not shift like its stuck in 1st gear, then it will act like its gonna shift and all of a sudden go into nuetral. tried manually shifting it, but it does the same thing. the fluid DOES smell a little burnt but its still a nice pink/red. i tried disconnecting the negative battery cable to see if maybe the PCM had to be reset, but it didnt do anything. i highly doubt that driving the car for apx. 3 miles with the fluid a quart low would cause catastrophic failure. i REALLY dont wanna put another tranny in this car...do you guys think its done???

Re: I was afraid this was going to happen...
Try a bottle or two of lucas Transmission Oil fix, and get your trans fluid changed along with the filter and see what happens, the clutches and bands in the transmissions get worn over time...might be sticking, i have had some issues with the transmission in both my grand prix's its a pain in the but

Um, Grandprixgtx00, I cant quite remember what the "limp in" gear is for the 4t65e, but you might try just unplugging the wire harness at the transmission and try driving it to see what happens. All trannys default to a failsafe forward gear when there is a circuit problem to the solenoids. If I remember corretly its 2nd. So unplug it, and try to drive it, you will have reverse and only one forward gear (2nd?). If you infact can drive it like this for a little while, then maybe your problem is electrical. Make sense?

Re: I was afraid this was going to happen...
dont think so, neutral saftey switches just complete the starting circuit, they have nothing to do with transmissions shifting.
If you can drive it, you can take it to a shop to have them scan it for codes, or even have them hook it up to a pressure guage and have them check line pressure. Wait for Troy to give his opinions, he's very knowledgable with these 4t65e's. How many miles are on the car?

Re: I was afraid this was going to happen...
well...i drove the car around all night last night. took it on about a 100 mile venture. now the car shifts. its slips REALLY bad into 2nd, and shifts really early into 3rd. no problems w/ OD or reverse.
I'm thinking i have a PCM issue. you guys think that maybe if i have the PCM flashed it will fix the problem? i know putting used 4T65E's in these cars are either a hit or a run. this suuuuuckkkks....

Re: I was afraid this was going to happen...
Alright Man, here is the Clutch/Band application chart for the 4t65e. I'm not very good at reading these, so maybe Bob, Rich, or Lynn will be able to help you out. We havn't heard from Troy lately so he must be busy, he seems to be the go to guy for trans issues. Maybe if were lucky, He'll post a reply. Sorry for resurecting Bob, I just didnt feel right hijacking the other thread grandprixgtx00 and I started talking about this in.
Jared, right? Jared, basically with the clutch/band application chart you go down the list and see what gears work (R D 3 2 1). and through process of elimination, you can usually find out whats causing your problem. Whether it be a forward clutch, forward band, input sprag..... It appears Limp in mode for the 4t65 is 3rd and reverse, so if your tranny is stuck in 1st, then I guess you can rule out an electric issue. ![]()

Re: I was afraid this was going to happen...
thanks a bunch for the info Tim! unfortunatly i've pretty much given up on the car. its been sitting for almost 2 weeks. I'm pretty sure i broke a hard part somewhere because now it grinds really bad when i start it, and the fluid is pretty close to black
my dad is coming here this Friday with a flat bed and we are towing it back up to his shop. he still has the original tranny that came out of the car, so we're going to just try and rebuild it. as for the tranny that is in the car right now...the place where i bought it from is giving me a 100% refund. I'm pretty curious to take this tranny out of the car and tear it apart. once i do that I'll let you guys know exactly what happened. I'm thinking that when i put the shift kit in the car, i made the 1-2 a little too agressive and broke a hard part. everytime i got on the off ramp of the freeway and pushed the gas down the car would drop down real hard into a lower gear, then when it upshifted...it really jerked. i think this may have been my fault thanks again...Tim, i really appreciate all your help! looking at the diagram though, it seems to me that maybe the 1-2 support roller clutch may be what is wrong??

Re: I was afraid this was going to happen...
Ha, yeah no problem. Thats good you can get a refund. Since that original tranny is out, it will be easy to rebuild. Are you gonna get a hardened 4th gear clutch shaft from zzp?

Re: I was afraid this was going to happen...
quick update...i got my car back this weekend. my dad says that the 2nd gear clutch was in peices
so that caused the tranny to just burn right up. i believe that the shift kit caused this. i had it set way too aggresive. i did not put the shift kit in this tranny. i did put the ZZP hardened 4th clutch shaft in though. put a whole new master kit in, along with a new input shaft and torque converter. 1.0 PCM is on its way, should be here sometime next week
