Quick Build Jeep

Hey all,

Found this model at Big-Lots! for $5. I went on the www and looked at random images of CJ-7's. Found a pic of one that I liked the look of and used it as a loose example.






Just finishing a long build, I decided to play with this one and try to get it done in a week or 2. Well I got the Flu a couple days after starting it. But I am back at it now. Been about 6 days on it now.

Also wanted to play with weathering and get a feel for it more. I did a little to the undercarriage of my last model. I'm finding I really like to do weathering, even though it can be mentally draining and seems like you can go on forever with changes.
For the weathering I am using one of the Tamiya weather Master kits (Snow Soot Rust). And some various other paints I have laying around (some water color paints that came in some Art kit have come in handy).

This Kit was worth about 5$. Badly molded parts, ill-fitting, lots of flash, etc. But thats whats fun about thrashing it, its was cheap and there is no pressure on myself to make it perfect.. ;-)

Just about done with all the sub-assembly. Have a few more parts to weather and join together before final assm. Hope it goes together without massive probs. Anyway.. here are some pics along the way.

LOL.... Thanks man. All this is just guess work for me. I have no idea what I am doing. But I suppose I have learned a few things from hanging out here and reading some posts.

Hope to have the finished model this weekend. Keep your fingers crossed!

Gotta love the big lots $5 models. I've bought a few as well and feel no pressure to make 'em look good.

You are brave painting and AMT body pieces before assembly. They seem to fit like crap in my experience. Your weathering looks awesome.

Here are the last of the updates before I finish. I am continuing to add/change the weathering as I go along. I also found out that the stance is WAY to low so I am trying to solve that issue. I have never done any real mods to a model. So this will be a good learning exp.

Anyway, figured I would show some of the progress. I won't post anymore WIP pics, just so the final has more of a "ta-da" thing to it..lol.

Well, to be honest, this has all been guesswork for me. I really didn't know what I was doing. So I just tried things until they looked OK.

On the image below... all those "rotted out" rust areas (circled in red) were made by simply using my X-acto knife with #11 blade, and using the tip, picking and cutting into the plastic until I get a slighty rough look. Then I just paint over that area with some water based crafts paints (random mix of brown, red, yellow, black).

For some of the other weathering I am using the Tamiya weather master set I show in the image. I use it not only with the dry brushing their instructions show. But I also slightly wet some small paint brushes and make a "paint"-if you will- with it and brush it on.

Like I said, all of this is just hit and miss with me. I have never done weathering before really. Other than a bit on the frame of my last model (68 firebird). Just seems like its trial and error with it. Keep on applying until it looks right.. ;-)
