Question 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee V84X4 Front end?????

I would like to start by saying this site is awhsome and ant help is very appereciated.......Ill even sweeten it up with a $25 gift cert to your choice!!!

Here we go...Just bought a 99 jeep grand cherokee limited V8 4x4 w/ quadra track awd last night with 143K. Stole it for $1900. The story I got, which I believe is it just started making this weird noise from the front end a couple days ago. Its a very, very loud almost like when you need power steering fluid but louder. Also it only happens when moving. If you are in park and rev and or turn steering wheel--nothing. Only when the vehicle is moving and I mean in anyway. I even got on the top put the tranfer case and trans in N and pushed free wheeled it with no power to the wheels and it still made the noise. Upon return from the test drive I looked under it and noticed the front drive shaft was missing so all of the clever N pushing it down the hill I beleived proved nothing. It sounded like it was comming from the drivers side but its really hard to tell. Also from the inside of the vehicle it was loud however the people standing in the drive as we left/retured didnt hear it as i would have though. Anouther thing I may mention is it does have the shifting problem that im almost sure just needs to be reprogramed (flashed) from what ive read. I dont thing that has anything to do with this though as it sounds like it comming from the front of the vehicle. Let the games begain...... THANK YOU!!!!

wheel bearings will make noise under load and vehicle moving....also your vehicle is known for defective rusted brake rotors so make sure all the brake hardware is good.............when your done fixing this vehicle then you may not say you got a good deal...........

Most likely wheel bearings or worst case scenario is ring/pinion damage. Would be a good idea to lift the front end and spin wheels with no load to see if sound is still present, if it is then pull the diff cover and check the ring gear for damage. If no damage there check the play in the ball joints, if still nothing then might need to pull the shafts from one side at a time and check the ujoint's, bearings, and axle shafts for damage.

Cool Re: 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee V84X4 Front end?????

I just burned the bearings in the front differential, and have pinion damage, and would like to know if it is possible to remove the ring so that I am able to use my vehicle in 2 wheel drive only, for a short time. Can you please tell me how to do this, and a diagram if possible. I need my vehicle ASAP as I live out in the country and am 39 miles from town and hope there is a temporary solution to this problem.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Even if he has to replace the entire front axle, it will still be a bargain My guess is (since the front driveshaft was removed) that the quadra drive kept trying to engage the front at certain times and something got damaged. Bearings, differential, ring and pinion... but a complete gutting and refurbishing should be relatively cheap, or even a complete assembly from a junkyard.

I'm having a rear axle redone with a new ring and pinion ($150) a new differential ($350), and the shop that's doing the work has the bearings, ABS reluctor, seals, and shims as a kit and their total bill will be $350. That's $850 for an axle that is torn down to an empty shell and set up the way I want it for performance use. You can probably buy a junkyard axle for $350 or so and just swap them out. Grab the driveshaft while you're at it for another $30.
