Basic Cold Air Intake

I'm looking for a K&N type cone filter that will fit the '01 Regal V6 intake and comes with a screw clamp. Doesn't have to be K&N. I read the Pontiac article on installing a box around one, which looks much like the regular air box with the top cut off, but they don't give you a part number for the filter.

I could just modify my existing box if needed, to use it to keep the heat away, but the parts places online only refer you to a rectangular K&N filter, which is a replacement type item. That won't get me much more air into the intake. And the cone filters I see that come up after you plug in your vehicle type are in all different sizes. There's no way a 4", 5" and 6" can all fit!

If anyone has a link to a cone filter they've attached successfully, please post it. Or if you've measured and know the outside width of the intake tube, that would also save me some work and I can search for one based on that.

Re: Basic Cold Air Intake

Have you taken a closer look at the stock airbox? The intake port for it is located right behind the front driver's side headlamp therefore technically it is getting cold air (cooler than engine air) and from the high pressure area located there. IMO best thing to do is modify the stock airbox. Open/widen the intake port and gut what is not needed inside the box. Then use either a K&N drop-in air filter or an AC Delco paper type. The AC Delco will most likely give the best filtering and airflow even over the K&N drop-in at least according to some unofficial independent tests performed that are posted on the Internet. Plus you have to service and oil K&N filters.

Other option if you have the money is just get a complete CAI/FWI kit from companies that supply one for your Regal. Thrasher, MSP, SLP, K&N Aircharger.

Re: Basic Cold Air Intake

Thanks for the brand name recommendations. I found what I was looking for, just the cone filter:

I agree, no need for their fancy $200 versions of the original airbox when I can open that up some myself. But I do want to try the cone-style filter. It made a huge difference on my previous car, a Sebring, that I want to try it again.

Thanks!

That is the same replacement cone filter (K&N clone) for my Thrasher CAI in my GTP. Also, keep in mind when you remove the airbox assembly to install the cone filter you will have to remount and secure the PCM module since it is located in the airbox assembly. For example the Thrasher has a tray to mount and secure the PCM.
