My new beater

Finally picked one up. It's nothing great or extravagant. But it'll get the job done. Just picked it up yesterday. It's a 95 Geo Prizm.







Just need to get some pimp hubcaps for it

Only think wrong with it is that it makes this loud clunking sound when you drive. It really only does it when you go over a bump or make a right hand turn. So I jacked it up yesterday to check it out and found that the passenger side CV joint was really loose and sloppy. I could wiggle it around with ease, and it makes an identical sound. So I'm fairly certain that's the problem. Also the oil pan gasket leaks like no tomorrow. I'll probably address that eventually. Other than that, the only other thing wrong with it is that the drivers side interior door handle is broken. Quick junkyard trip will fix that though.

It's got 263k miles on it, the guy I bought it from used to use it to deliver with at Domino's. It's surprisingly in very solid condition, even has the original owners manual with the original dealership business card lol.

The great part about it, is that I only paid $200 for it. After TTT, the total cost was $376. Not a bad deal at all if you ask me. Insurance is only going to be $40 a month as well for PIP/Liability. I'm going to go to a couple shops to get a quote on how much the CV joint will cost to fix. If it's outrageous, then I'm going to do it myself. I've never worked on a FWD before, so it's all new to me. I got a friend who's into Honda's and works on the engines all the time. Figure maybe I can get him to help me out if it comes down to it. Can't be too much different for him.

My corolla, vurtually the same car, had a nice pizza aroma to it too, I think that's like the "new car" smell for a used car.

OH, and the Axles arent that bad.

Oh this is even better. It's got a nice tobacco aroma, guy even left me some Marlboro light cig buts in the ash tray. It's got this tobacco mixed with dirt type film encrusted on the rear view mirror, the gauges, all the windows.. it's disgusting lol. Gonna clean it up somewhat this morning.

Would it be worth picking up a Haynes/Chilton's manual to replace the axel shaft? What all is involved. Want to get this thing drive able asap.

Merely disconnecting em from the knucle assemby and popping em out of the transaxle.

Get a decent set of rebuilds as thes axle do suck and have a short lifespan (50K miles or so)

Sounds easy, is it really as simple as it sounds, or am I going to be

How much do the rebuilt axles normally go for, do you remember? Is there anything retaining the joint in the in the tranny? Or does it just slide out like the driveshaft? Just wanna make sure, heck I'll probably call my Honda friend and see if he can help me out with it. If it's really that easy then I'm sure he'll have no problem with helping me. Help me learn a thing or two in the process as well.

I wanna say they run about 185-250ish depending on brand and where you go.

And to be hoest, I don't remember what type of retainer they have, but I do remember have a harder time freeing up the calipers than "popping" out the axle.

I use a large heavy screwdriver or a pry bar, depending on how much room I have to manuver it around under the car. I do believe those have a carrier shaft and bearing on the passenger side as well. If that's the case, you can probably hit the old axle shaft with a hammer and get it off the carrier shaft, just be careful not to beat up the carrier bearing.

Thanks for the help guys, got the CV joint out and replaced. Seemed to driv fine after that, so I decided to drive it to work that night. I don't even get a mile away from my house when the speedometer jumps up to 60+mph (I'm in a 45) and I realize I'm going nowhere, and the car is slowing down. The damn tranny went out on me lol. So I had to sit there for an hour and a half and wait for the tow truck driver, and got it on home. So yesterday, I'm thinking chenge the tranny filter and fluid out, and see if that helps. So That's what I did, and now it's driving again. I'm just too scared it's gonna break down on me again to really take it out for a test drive. After I fixed it, I just drove it around the neighborhood. It's still got some kind of slight vibration that occurs, So I gotta see if I can pin point where that's coming from now.

Also, I can't tell ya how happy I was to see a drain plug in the transmission pan lol.

thats pretty sweet..im thinking about getting something else to drive durring the week so i dont have the gas eater out all the time..i was at my boys bike shop and he has a nice used cbr900 that he's selling..i think i may try an jump up on that..but i really need a sweet beater pickup truck!! a deal like u got lol..good shit man!
